Wow I miss this place so much. My dad was a Coastie, we got transferred up there. The best 4 years of my life. Then my dad retired and we moved next to family. Been gone for 5 years now. I miss the Old Power House's sushi. No place has compared. Of course, that's living inland for you. I miss the silence, the trees, the salty air (not the fishy air tho), the lush summers, the Alutiiq culture, Harborside Coffee, Crab Fest, and so much more. Wish we never left. Thank you for this video, it brings back so many memories.

WOW!!! I was stationed at Marine Barracks, Kodiak from Feb 1964 til Oct 1964. I was in a downtown waterfront bar called "Solly's" when the Great Earthquake took place. Downtown Kodiak was ALL dirt streets with wooden sidewalks much like old western movies. We in Marine barracks had the city of Kodiak under martial law for weeks after the main quake. Aftershocks of 7 and above happened several times daily for months after the "big one". Loved the duty there for the natural beauty of the island. What a huge difference. We all spent the night of the quake at what was then the "new" high school on pillar mt.

Probably the best video on KZitem as far as actually showing the island and its entirety.. I used to live down at the Kodiak Plaza, we lived on what was called the " A " building first one up the hill... man do I miss crab fest etc... I lived there during my 3rd-4th grade year before moving down to the lower 48's... and this was back in 05-06 when we lived on the Island... man McDonald's use to be the hangout spot for all of us kids in elementary

I was stationed in Kodiak with the US Navy at Fleet Weather Central, Kodiak '61 to '63. My daughter was born there. The town was much smaller then. You could walk from one side to the other in about five minutes. I can't believe a half century has gone by.

In time frame 00:01, upstairs where the 2 tone tan and white color building is located was a pizza parlor called Captain's Keg in the late 70's/early 80's and below from the restaurant was a burger/arcade joint. I think it was called Sizzler's. Miss living in Kodiak, had awesome childhood memories at that time before moving out to Anchorage with my family.

Can any Kodiak natives tell me where I can find more information about the beached ship at the top of the screen at 3:24? I stumbled across it while browsing Wikipedia; it is one of four surviving Liberty Ships from WWII. The other three have been preserved as museum ships, but this one is the main office to a seafood company. I was wondering how it ended up here and being used for that purpose. As it is right next to the ferry dock, I'm sure that it probably is a personal landmark for some. Does anyone know anything more than that?

It was carried there by the wave? If everything else was washed away, I guess that would make sense. Pretty interesting that it is still being used as offices. You would think they would have built a more traditional building by now. Thanks for the quick response, I wasn't expecting one on a video six years old.
