City Of Salt is the trio of clarinet, oud and electric guitar which draws on some of the more untrodden traditions of group improvisation to map out what could be called a Third Stream Arabic Music. Neither the easy juxtapositions of 'oriental jazz' nor the all too reverential treatments of 'traditional' Arabic Taksim, the trio follows a 3rd path, using other blueprints or sources implicit in the ground of Arabic Maqam and free improvisation to create another 'stream' of improvisation-a more open, extended approach to form and melody, both 'oriental' and 'occidental'. Their performances at Reel Iraq coincides with the international release of their debut albumTowers Open Fire on Philadelphian label Fire Museum.
This show featured a collage of Baghdad's cityscapes quilted together by Iraqi filmmaker Parine Jaddo. These recently shot visual fragments come to life with City of Salt's streams of improvised soundscapes, threading meanings of a reality in a dream-like dystopia. This fluid collaboration between the group and the filmmaker was born organically during the making and the recording of the music for the documentary film "Broken Record."
Reel Festivals were excited to feature City of Salt and watch as their non-conformist attitude sends shivers down the spines of the purists.
