Thanks for the info! I had never heard of that language. Love comments like this. Thanks -H
@treehugger2044

Doric is more of a dialect than its own language - most words are a corruption of the English equivalent. Doric is often spoken by “fowk frae” the countryside - whereas, maist fowk bidin (“living”) in Aberdeen “dinna spik” proper Doric, rather they spik the “toonser” variant - with “toon” meaning “town”. The “al wifies” (the ladies) in your video seemed to be talking in Doric about the “waye oot” i.e they were looking for the “way out” of the train station. There are some words in Doric that are unique to Doric but “maist” words are “nae” original and are just a different “waye o” pronouncing the proper English version of the word. It’s a great “waye o spikin, if you ken fit fowk are haverin’ on aboot.”
@lucasduncan1082
3 жыл бұрын
@@treehugger2044 Doric is a dialect of Scots - which is a language. A sister language of English, but still its own language ... in the same way that Swedish and Norwegian are very similar but still different languages.

Best video I've seen of my home town. Unfortunately you missed a turn. About 40mins you were walking down Union Terrace and turned right at the traffic lights. If you had turned left you would have come across (inter alia) St Nicholas Kirk (Church), Aberdeen's Mither Kirk where all the pomp and circumstance is carried out. It also has a carillon of 48 bells weighing 4.6 tonnes which is played at least once per day. From there you could have walked down Market Street, turned right into Guild Street where you would have seen the best row of granite buildings in Aberdeen. This would have led you to the railway Station. There is Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic. Scottish Gaelic is pronounced Gaalic. No criticism intended.

@@CityWalks The Market on the side of Market St has been demolished, a new one is currently being built however. Most of Union St has been closed to vehicles except buses, taxis and bicycles. Lots of other streets have been closed to cars, navigating the city by car is an absolute nightmare with lots of congestion. Parking your car when you eventually find somewhere to park is rather expensive now. First Aberdeen ( Local Bus provider ) has gotten rid of some of the less busy bus routes, the buses are not always the most reliable. Private business especially on Union St have disappeared. On a more positive note however, there is a mega scale proposal to revitalise the whole beachfront. There is also a new football stadium in the works. The P & J Live ( massive event centre ) has completed being built and is a great event complex. A big new chunk of the harbour is under construction which will be able to accommodate the worlds largest cruise ships and other mammoth sized ships with a new terminal also going along with it. The city is also becoming Scotlands most environmentally friendly cities with most of its electricity being produced by the off shore wind farm and other hydro electric plants nearby. Still, such a brilliant and unique city to visit and would tell anyone to go to go visit who asked. It’s such a great city to live in. We would welcome you back anytime.

Thank you for yor efforts on behalf of Aberdeen. I have to say that the first 36 minutes of this video are about as depressing as I've ever seen. You certainly picked some streets which if viewed by a potential visitor to Aberdeen, would definitely dissuade them from ever visiting. I kept wanting to shout at the video, "For God's sake, don't go that way!" (I actually used another word insted of "God," which KZitem would disallow. As a native Aberdonian, and a frequent returnee, I am dismayed by what has become of this once great city. Union Street was almost deserted on my last return (July, 2022), and this on a Saturday. George Street is a ghost of its former self. John Lewis is gone. Debenham's is gone. The Market is gone. There are many much nicer parts of Aberdeen, but I suppose that with a one hour walking tour, you're pretty much stuck in center city. I do wish that you had gone down in to Union Terrace Gardens, as you walked right by the entrances. BTW, it's "MER-cat" Cross, not "mer-CAT" Cross, and the wifies in the train station were speaking Doric, not Gaelic. But thank you for trying!

Interesting. It's a bit quiet when I listen to it but when I turn up the volume it seems fine. Do you use headphones? Are you watching on a TV or another device? Not much I can do about this one but I'll try to be more careful in the future. -H

Didn't see much. Most comments about Aberdeen are very positive or very negative. We had a great time ourselves and I'd go back for another visit. -Henry

@@plasticbucket Chewing gum, cigarette butts not easily seen but a big problem. Also varies depending where you are in the city. I don't think we're any better or worse than cities of similar size.

We discovered your video today and enjoyed the walk, except that you BOUNCE while walking. After a while the bouncing up and down made me nauseous. Please invest in a stabilizer for your camera. I can't watch walking tour videos with the bouncing motion.
