£208 - The start of Caesar's Civil War was in 49 BC when Gaius Julius Caesar defied the Senate's demands to give up his land and armies to cross the Rubicon and march at Rome. Since you were slightly critical of hypaspists last time around: THEY only take 5 iron compared to the Legion's 10, which combined with their slightly lower production cost makes them slightly more rush-friendly. Legions chopping Legions is obviously very potent but Hypaspists have an edge if you have pre-builds. Trajan's free monument is usually the key ingredient by getting Rome to Agoge and Oligarchy faster.

Tell me about it - I also get this a lot! I find you just have to shave 10, 15 turns off the speed of what a natural attack pattern feels like. Chop the swordsmen, upgrade the warriors on the cheap - Caesar massively helps to be fair as well with the bonus gold and the fact legion are so good - if you just slam in as fast as you can, generally speaking you can kill the enemy archers before they get the chance to upgrade. Man at Arms can generally survive crossbows as well if you rush those. Also Oligarchy / Great General yada yada you know the drill! I got seriously lucky with Sweden as a neighbour to be fair as they often rush universities for their UA so they aren't down the bottom of the tech tree like some civs are!!! @aaronlatif52
Жыл бұрын
I think getting oligarchy earlier would get you going quicker then the few barb camps you captured early. Then getting Military tradition early would let you steamroll Kristina with a few less legions. Side note before arguing Trajan even in this situation again: I think going for bronze working and iron working right away would lower the need for early science and getting an encampment out instead to get the great general out, like animal husbandry + pottery + writing are not essential for the intial rush and once you had 4-6 legion or more, then could then go for campus and gov plaza to help get the techs for getting the men at arms push. In most games it times well with getting the second settler out to make sure you have iron in your empire and times well with having money to buy a builder to upgrade for the tech boost. Then with agoge, basically guaranteed iron and probably having an encampment and barracks, and having bought multiple builders - I think the timing to focus on producing military is perfect. With two slingers, a warrior and an encampment I kinda bait my neighbor in declaring war for grievances purposes, weakening their army with a low investment, and then reversing right away with my own legions. But to return to trajan vs julius: maybe most important about the free monuments, you can afford to get Pingala and Connoisseur because it will be much earlier then Julius could and then it would be timed to be able to get Amani and Victor right as they become more useful in your war. You also get agoge quicker to get more warriors out... You also get god king quicker so a few coins and a better pantheon quicker. The ability to switch cards more often to optimize easier. You also get to mercenaries quicker and tier 2 gov.... At this point Im just screaming the benefits of culture which I think we all know. So yeah Im still not convinced Julius is ever better then Trajan accept at one thing. The snowball. When you are in the lead he keeps pushing and pushing to keep the momentum of the war going where Trajan's bonus just stops. So if your first war was succesful the second become much easier and really by the third war you are probably fielding more muskets and line infantry then Trajan would be able to muster. So trajan helps you win quicker and julius helps you to continue to win. But that is assuming your first target is a normal civ and not someone strong to early war like Gaul. So yeah Julius IMO is dependent on your neighbor and is a snowball civ requiring a great conquest to get going (like a worse Alexander IMO) - making him situationally good where as Trajan is basically always great.

Honestly, this video just solidifies my opinion that Trajan is better. Sure, it's a bit of a toss up in this game since Sweden was pretty much a perfect conquest target, and you had a perfect capital to chop out legions. Even then I think the free monuments might have been better just to get your tier 1 government faster, or maybe get Victor earlier so that your chop timing is better. But for the average game? I'd really rather have the versatility that free monuments gives.
@AndrewChumKaser
Жыл бұрын
Monuments for free from settlers is better. Not just because the 270 g is strictly more than 200, but Both of Julius' bonuses are dependant on the AI doing things advantageous to you, IE settling close enough to you and barbarians spawning. You making settlers is under your control, and even then you get a bonus immediately with your first city getting the monument, which gets you more culture and therefore earlier government. More yields right away will be much more consistent than the AI making mistakes and giving you the opportunity to win more than you already started to. "But gold is more flexible!" Gold is useful for getting you things like monuments in the first place. You'd be spending gold on stuff like monuments anyway, so you getting them for free is essentially getting you gold to spend on other good things like builders regardless.

I like the snowball effect of the gold boosts but I'm still not convinced it's enough to make up for losing the free monuments. The RNG of having barb camps to raid or being forced to war just feels so much more limiting to me. (That said, currently, with Barbarian Clans mode turned on you can get the bonus gold every time you raid so there's huge earning potential there.) If Julius had some other buff I'd be totally on board though as he does look like a lot of fun. There was an early rumour of a free policy card on capturing a capital, that would be amazing. (Although maybe too strong?) Maybe just something simple like units have +1 sight range ("VIDI") which would be a big boost to scouts and help secure era score so you're more likely to be conquering with a golden age and it would give you a slight tactical edge as you can manoeuvre and position troops a bit more optimally. As an aside, don't you wish Legions could build classical era roads the way Military Engineers can build railroad? I'd take that over the fort any day!

It's not quite that. Normally when you disperse a barbarian clan, you get 10 XP for the unit that dispersed it and it disappears. When you raid a barbarian clan, you gain 50 gold, your unit gets pushed out of the camp and it spawns a new unit. You then cannot raid it for another 10 turns. With Julius Caesar, when you disperse it, nothing else happens, but when you raid it, you get 150 gold instead of 50 gold. This is still limited to once every 10 turns and it still spawns a new unit, so it's still balanced considering that Julius Caesar hasn't got many other powers.

I am relatively new to Civilization. Or I have played it here and there over the years but I am really enjoying Civ 6 and I have over 700 hours now. I really like Trajan, but I was surprised how much I like Ceasers ability Veni, Vidi, Vici. That gold from the barbs is so nice to just upgrade your warrior to legion when you unlock iron working, and I personally make an encampment before any other district so that I have a great general ready to go rather than using the money to buy that. More legion with experience from the barracks is also nice. I've heard complaints about Ceasers ability and that its a bit lack luster, and I kind of agree. I think that for role play he could have a government kind of ability, like how Trajan gives a free monument because of his leadership. I think of Ceaser as the og mob boss, and having an ability like being able to switch policy cards each turn without a cost would have been cool. Rome is all about expanding as quickly as possible , and making people join your empire by the sword if need be. The gold is nice, but could have been reworked I think. But despite that Ceaser is becoming one of my favourite leaders because it's teaching me how to do early warfare, or warfare at all. Hit early, fast and hard if you're doing war.

Did Sweden really settle 4 tiles away from Caesar? Did they learn nothing from Gaul's migrations into the province??

Hi Ursa, great video! I am thinking of making my own PC, as I am playing Civ 6 on console. What specs do you use please?
@UrsaRyan

Hey! I have a very powerful computer as I use it for YT so it wouldn't be a fair comparisson, but have a look at the reccomended specs on the Civ 6 / steam website, it's pretty accurate

excuse you, my cats adore me and seek out daily comfort from me as much as i do from them. to this cat slander i say "pah!". when i inevitably die otherwise alone in my home and my cats nom on my corpse, i will consider it a relief that they got one last wet meal from me in the time it took for someone to find my body. 😆

update: my cat walked on my keyboard and, among other things, changed the playback speed to 75%. i spend a good five minutes wondering why ryan sounded drunk before i realized what happened.

It wouldn't be a Firaxis game if it wasn't full of bugs upon being updated, & more than likely will bring new bugs for the rest of the game's lifetime.
