This provides proof that the talents of the Civic musicians AND the sound snd video engineers will assure the upgraded role of classical music in the 21st century.

I would like to know if the musicians were provided with a click track or a video of the conductor or other means to play together. Some examples of what type of recording gear used would also be helpful.

yeah, i'm interested too. Have you seen the Bolero performance by the NY Phil? In the coments they do explain that "Everyone recorded themselves while listening to a metronome in headphones", and later edited and mixed using freeware, Audacity for audio and VLC and HitFilm Express for video. Check it out.

What a wonderful tribute to the artistic spirit in a time of terrible trouble! It is a display of courage and hope that I, for one, will never forget. Like everyone else, the arts are in crisis in this country, Hardly a day goes by when I don't see another cancellation or closing notice in my email. But art and artists will not surrender in the faceoff catastrophe. Their hope is needed as much as it has ever been.

My son's school is interested in doing something like this for their school. I know Zoom seems to be a no-no in its Hack-ability but what means did the orchestra use to rehearse? Zoom? Something else?
@pusheenthecat9264

I'm unsure, they could have used a variety of different methods, ranging from zoom to individual clips put together and calibrated.

I think some of this is kind of fitting with the very recent death of Krzysztof Penderecki. The orchestra is still there, they are just showing us exactly what these instruments can do.

I have listened to many virtual musical presentations, but this takes the technique to new heights. The quality of the performance by the young musicians deserves the highest praise. Chicago is fortunate to have two exceptional orchestras, The CSO and the COO!

Congratulations! May I ask how is it possible that the orchestra has quite a unified sound, even though they were recorded individually?
@arbitrarygreay
4 жыл бұрын
You can see that most of the players are visibly wearing headphones or earbuds. They're listening to either a clicktrack or a pre-recording, which controls the tempo.
@marotiem

@@arbitrarygreay I got that. By unified sound, I mean that you hear it the same way you would hear it in a concert hall. For example, the sound of the violins merge into one section. You do not hear individual violins pop out because let's say their microphone was more sensitive. It sounds, as if everyone was recorded in the same room. I am interested in how you achieve this quality from a sound engineering perspective.
@arbitrarygreay

@@marotiem Ah. Thanks for the clarification. I was wondering myself how everyone seemed to have above-average recording equipment. But to your question, there are soundwave transforms you can do to match peak amplitudes, normalize the volume of the loud and soft parts, reduce ambient noise, and add faint reverb or manipulate the stereo to "situate" them in a specific audio "location" (like with those ASMR videos). So major kudos to the sound engineers!

How do you learn to listen to the music of Natalie Joachim's kind? I went to her website hoping for gentler introduction to it, but the piece there, "Papa Loco" is of completely different genre. Any recommendations? I had to fast forward her piece, and I really hated to do this.
