Myanmar's steadily widening civil conflict with the military junta at odds with a range of ethnic groups, has made the completion of the Kaladan multimodal connectivity project uncertain. Even if it is completed within the next couple of years, unless the conflict comes to an end, who will invest or use it.
In this conversation on StratNewsGlobal, Rajeev Bhattacharya, an indMyanmependent journalist based in Gauhati, Assam, said the Rohingya issue is not the sole problem for India. The presence of the rebel Arakan Army in Rakhine state and its threats to tax all projects there suggests trouble ahead.
Bhattacharya says the threats by the Arakan Army points to a larger security breakdown with the junta's forces overstretched. They are not only fighting various ethnic rebels, they are also up against their own ethnic brethren opposed to the junta which overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
