This episode was filmed on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2023. What a great place to be on Veteran's Day!
Today I will take you around the grounds of General George Washington's home and give you a brief history of the house, and the man who turned this small cottage into a 21 room mansion that encompassed 8,000 acres when the General died. I will look at the efforts to save the house from ruin and the trouble the Mount Vernon Ladies Association ran into in dealing with the Union Army in 1861.
After the seat of the war moved away from Washington, DC, Mount Vernon was safe from incursion from either army. But by 1864, the Ladies Association was in desperate need of funds as the population from both sides were more concerned with basic survival than in preserving the home of General Washington.
While it is a bit costly to visit this estate, I highly recommend it to any history loving American.
Sadly, the Ladies Association does not allow video recording inside the mansion, so I could not give you a tour of the home.
Please enjoy this unique report on the American Civil War.
