I had way to much play in my steering on my Jeep, I noticed a bolt missing and another bolt was stripped and loose from the steering gear box mounting bracket. Looked like they tried fixing it by welding it to the frame but, they did a horrible job. Upon further inspection I also noticed the original bracket was cracked. No bueno señor! Since these frames are boxed for extra strength I had no way of accessing the nuts to replace the missing and stripped bolts. Inside the frame. After looking around to see how I could get to them, I had no choice but to cut my way to them. This was the last thing I wanted to do but, had to be done if I wanted to fix this problem the right way. I decided to cut a 1-1/2”x 1-1/2” hole in the crossmember and then welding it back on after. I took 2 grade 8 nuts and welded a 1”x1” flat stock piece on to them (so they wouldn’t spin when I tighten the bolts.) and inserted them through the hole I cut on the crossmember. Worked out good I was able to install the new heavy duty bracket I purchased from M.O.R.E. (Mountain Off Road Enterprises) which works great, only complain about it is that the bolts they sent to mount the gear box onto the bracket are about 1/2” to short. I had to go get 2” instead of 1-1/2” long bolts, not a big deal. Everything came out good well, so far no problems.
