Both my parent are covered under the same insurance policy, but one of them is a senior citizen. How much will I be able to claim as a deduction in this case?

@Ashish Ranjan, you can claim a deduction on premiums up to Rs 25,000 for yourself, your spouse and your children. If your parents are below 60 years and insured, then you can claim a deduction up to Rs 25,000 and up to Rs 50,000 if they are above 60. But, if your parents are uninsured are above 60, then you can claim a deduction on medical expenses of up to Rs 50,000. Hope this clarifies your query. Team Clear

Hello, The medical insurance premium (or medical bills in case of uninsured senior citizens) can be claimed against Section 80D found under the 'Deductions tab' in the ITR forms. We hope this helped.

@@CleartaxIndia Thanks, I tried that now and it's showing some "does not match with Form 16" error. I don't know what Form 16 has to do with the medical insurance.

Hello Sadakat, If you are talking about claiming of medical expenditure under Section 80D, then there is no such mandatory requirement. However, the main condition is that medical expenditure of only senior citizen can be claimed who is not covered under any health insurance policy.

hi, My father is senior citizen. I paid for my father's health insurance of 25,000.... Also, I paid for medical expenses of him like tablets for around 20,000. None of this 20,000 is reimbursed from the health insurance. Can I claim total 45k under 80D?

Hello Hemanth, Please note that section 80D allows a deduction for medical insurance premium paid up to specified limits and Rs.5000 deduction towards preventive health checkups. Section 80D also allows deduction of medical expenditure for senior citizens provided such senior citizen is not covered under any medical insurance. As your father is already covered under insurance, you will not be able to claim any medical expenses for him. You can claim Rs.25000 (maximum Rs.50,000) for your parents towards medical insurance. The medical bills can be claimed towards preventive health checks, however, the maximum deduction for this can be Rs.5000. Also, if any of the ailments for which the expenditure was incurred is covered as provided in Section 80DDB, the deduction for such expenditure can be claimed up to Rs.1 lakh for senior citizens. This will be available only if the diseases are specified in the section. . Hope this helped.
