I've thought the same as well. The image of one person playing this in an empty concert hall, as nuclear warheads rain down across the globe always comes to mind. Or an image of one person playing it, meanwhile outside, soldiers march through, executing everyone who comes near. It's the song of temporary peace, yet also one of sorrow. But it also is a song of finality. One of the end of something. It only seems fitting to be played at the end of the world.

I've had the opportunity to play on a some Steinway pianos from D, B and even the Hamburg model C at the music store. They are worth every penny. I'm not a concert pianist, no higher than intermediate level with an ear to play chords here and there, but a high quality piano such as a Steinway brings so much inspiration to you as a pianist while playing. The sound is simply beautiful and the action of the keys is so responsive to your emotions. Never have I felt so much connection to a piano before. I shall buy one someday.

@@coolpianostuff Haven’t bought a Steinway yet but I did upgrade from a Casio digital piano with hammer graded keys to a new Yamaha U3 upright. The action isn’t like a grand (and a Model D for that matter) due to the mechanism as an upright action but it’s nice to play on actual wooden keys striking hammers on acoustic strings with sound coming from a sound board. Perhaps one day I’ll get a grand but I’ll need to move to a bigger home first. Haha. Thanks for asking.

It used to be one of the compositions I relied on when I something to guide me back to my center but, for reasons I won't get into, I haven't listened to "Claire de Lune" for well over a decade; suffice to say that the song conjures ghosts buried long ago yet honored again on this sacred day. Accordingly, I avoided your two performances for a few hours. Maybe I drank one too many beers and couldn't help myself, but I clicked the queue and watched this. Then I watched it again. And again. I'm laughing and crying right now, and I can't express how cathartic that feels right now. It's an old video but I thank you for posting it.

@@pepriday6435 There is tons of research now from double-blind studies, AB testing etc that these differences are usually in the mind of the listener. The bottleneck to audio quality is the human ear - after a certain point increases in bit rate/reduced compression are no longer detectable under blind conditions. The audio in this track is not perfect because it's probably not using the very best possible microphone and conditions. But it's unlikely that audio compression is having much affect on your experience.

Picture it. Mid autumn. Auburn leaves strewn on the ground. You’re in a back alley in Paris watching the Seine wind along, not a care in the world. It’s the evening and the sky is a orange-pink colour. A sprinkling of rain. You’re stood under an old fashioned streetlamp lit by a candle. Burning, glowing a musty orange colour. It bathes you in it’s light. You can smell a patisserie in the distance. The scent of pastries and crepes gently caress your nose and you reminisce about a piece of music you wrote 150 years ago. *Clair de lune* . You wrote it for piano but you can hear someone play it effortlessly. Their heart and soul pour out into that one performance and capture the essence of the piece wonderfully. You light a cigarette and press it to your lips, the embers glowing as they fall to the ground.... Life. What is life? Why are we here? Why are you here? You shouldn’t be. You died 102 years ago. You remember nothing since and yet suddenly you’re here. France. The 21st century. Wait. Something is off. The music, the beautiful music you composed has stopped. C’est fini. You notice you can’t feel the autumn leaves crunch beneath your feet anymore, you’re floating. Drifting higher and higher, the Paris rooftops growing ever smaller below your feet, your head scraping the clouds. But it doesn’t hurt. You’re not scared. You’re where you are meant to be.

It's strange how when you know a song back and forth and you've played it hundreds of times but when you hear someone of Vinheteiro's caliber play it you suddenly hear different sounds coming out. Not different notes because they are all the same you play, but different sounds being created by different styles of articulation and tenderness. I've played this song so many times but I never hear the same notes come out of silence like whenever I hear it from this video, la vita e bella, no?

You then become more aware of yourself as you get older, having your ups and downs and sail through life. Then in your final days, you reflect back on your achievements, until you leave this earth. This song and your play style encompassed this theme so well. Very well done!

I don't know man, when the camera changes on 0:56 to reveal the empty chairs overlooking the stage... That's pretty weird. As in, it captured the subtle loneliness conveyed in the piece?
