I met Clarence Gatemouth Brown on the steps of the Chimes in Baton Rouge in 1999. I didn’t know who he was. He was hangin’ by himself, smoking his pipe, chilling, looking like he was waiting for a table. I asked him what he was up that night. He said he was performing at the Varsity. I’ll never forget how I felt in the days to follow. I knew I’d met someone special, and that I wouldn’t come that close to many great musicians again in my lifetime. He is a legend.
