The second moment method is an extremely useful tool in probability theory! It can be used to show that a random variable has a positive probability of being positive.
Erratum: Around minute 3:00, it says "P(X=0) \leq P( |X - E(X)| \gt E(X) )", but it should say "P(X=0) \leq P( |X - E(X)| \geq E(X) )", with a greater-than-or-equal-to in the probability on the right hand side. (Here I'm using LaTeX notation for "greater than" etc, since KZitem won't let me use the greater-than sign in the description).
