I have what may seem to be a simple question. When an element loses (or gains) an electron, where do they go (or come from)? Are there free electrons just hanging around that are available if needed?

no they simply share or exchange electrons from other atoms who want to basically get rid of their electrons...

To gain stability , according to octate rule in thier last shell thry need 8 electrons (mostly) thats why they lose or gsin electrons

At time 7.30 the radical sulphite is explained, at the same time it's name is mentioned as sulphide. Sulphite and sulphide radicals are two different radicals. Please see to it. Nice audible voice .

Gud evening Mam Mam why Carbonate have 2 negative charge Since it's total no. Of electrons are 22. So, when we distribute them into magic numbers we get 2,8,8,4 And since the carbonate must loss those 4 electrons and become a positively charged ion. Why ❓ Plzzz reply me tomorrow is my exam🙏

I have a doubt. Please clear it mam. How can we say the electrons are filled in the shell. I know that K shell occupies 2electrons , L shell occupies 8electrons ,M shell occupies 18 electrons and N shell occupies 32 electrons and S-2,P-6,d-10,f-15. You are saying in sulphite Ion 26 electrons had filled the shell?

Respected teacher! For the sake of notes this vid is awesome... But for the purpose of understanding you may need to add more info to it... further so many typos, (for eg. NH4 have one less e- not extra e- , also sulphide is jus S while shulphite is SO3) this can confuse students.. kindly put correction and reload the vid... great efforts 👍👏
