I’ve had my Sugden A21SE (bigger version of this one) for about 15 years and it has been excellent. I had to get it repaired last year but I sent it back to the factory and they did the work quickly and for a reasonable price. It’s nice to own something that can be repaired rather than disposed of - a real long term ownership proposition.

i habe a question and i hope to learn from your experience. i currently have a hegel h199. since half a year i am thinking about purchasing the sugden A21SE. i do not need an all in one solution because i am using an external dac and turntable. do you think sound wise there is a big difference between h190 and the sugden? is it worth the change or should i perhaps more concentrate perhaps on changing to a step up in turntable cartridge? if the change to the sugden is only minor, it is probably not worth the investment but i have no chance of direct comparison. thx for your thoughts on this
@gianpaologliori3604

@@0x21co I have never heard a Hegel amp so can't really make a meaningful comparison. The Sugden is very good but bear in mind it is Class A so has high energy consumption, gets quite hot and can produce some transformer hum. I really like the sound and the fact it can be repaired easily but sometimes feel tempted by a more modern design with fewer quirks and less power consumption - like a Hegel for example!

Now that brought back some memories from the very early 1970s when I was first learning about hi-fi! A friend purchased a Sugden A21 when the trend was to higher power amps such as Phase Linear and Crown. For me it was a revelation and have always pursued the _quality_ of sound ever since rather than volume. I’m also a fan of near field listening at sensible SPLs. Thanks again Tarun from the bottom of the planet :-)

Interesting review, I am a happy owner of a Sudden A21 Signature and can confirm that the sound is excellent and that 23W are more than needed. To confirm this, I never cranked the volume over 12h or 1h at the max. I am pairing it with a pair of ProACs SM100 and they sound amazing with the Sugden. Very firm and muscular bass, lively midrange and refined highs. I also use the built-in phono stage and can confirm it plays well with a Rega P3 with an Ortofon 2M black. Probably not as well as with a separate pre-phono, but still very silent and detailed. I have been using the A21 for one year and would never exchange it for a similar priced amp! Limited power and heat are not a problem at all! Only one comment on the limitations of the amp.... the power is 23w at 8 ohm, but goes down to 15w at 4 ohms. For this reason, I would recommend careful pairing with speakers that are either 8 ohms rated or that do not drop lower than 4 ohms.

Nothing can replace the musicality of Class A. Once you've tasted it, it's hard to go back. Sugden is a pioneer, it is one of the few manufacturers to offer real pure Class A quality, with incomparable sound, at an affordable price, when others tell you that only the first watts are in Class A. Thanks for the great review. I own the exact same Sugden amp. Excited to find this review as there aren’t many on the net. The only problem I face with Sugden it that its phono input does not match with my clearaudio turntable. It seems that Sugden prefers a high output cartridge. Great review. I think the some of the last points were some of the most pertinent. Matched correctly with sympathetic speakers these amplifiers are truly legacy products. Very few manufacturers can claim the history Sugden have. The fact they are all handmade in the UK I think makes them something of a bargain. Whilst the Hegel may be designed in Norway the amps are made in China with all the cost savings that provides.

I am really glad that you did this particular review and comparison. One of my all-time favourite listening experiences was a CAL Alpha DAC feeding an early vintage Sugden A21a, playing into a pair of Meadowlark Audio Kestrels. The only reason that I did not buy the amp then is that I felt that it was lacking a little oomph in the bass. Now, about 20 years later, I regret the decision - and own a Hegel H80. And now I want to find one of those A21a's and play it side-by-side with the Hegel. Cheers from Montreal.

Great channel. The one exception is that you keep using the term " At this price point " this sounds very " what hifi ". As If you spend more money, the product is automatically better. Well its not. I have auditioned hundreds of different products, and found zero correlation that more expensive is better. In fact, quiet the opposite. I have auditioned some very expensive speakers, and quiet frankly, thought some of them were crap. And I am a professional sound engineer.

That is a very good and essential point, you are stating here. It actually deserves more attention in general in the hifi community: E.g. more sound details, that you typically obtain in more expensive equipment, does not necessarily equals better musicality and thereby a more enjoyable listening session. To my opinion timing and especially tonality does, so these have to be present as well in the performance of the more expensive setup. Otherwise I would go for the less expensive, but more musical setup.

I tend to agree, but also results can vary a bit with bad pairings, installations, and being too hasty to recommend something because of hype. I still have trouble believing that my Mordaunt Short Pagent Series II speakers sound better than some of the new Focal and Fyne audio speakers I've heard. It's a shame you can't buy them anymore. Maybe someone can buy the blueprint for the speaker like something similar to the Rogers LS 5/9. What makes this all harder is a bias towards what we already have in our living room. But when all is said and done just don't buy something without hearing it and trying to work out if it will sound good on your own system, never mind someone else's.

I liked your description of class A vs. A/B better than anything I've seen -- short of a white-board expose with conductance curves, operating points, and such. I'd like to emphasize a point that should be obvious, but might not be: The issue of crossover distortion is especially apparent to experienced listeners because, at the level of fine details in audio, it looms much larger to that listener. Thus, hearing very fine detail can become annoying even at higher listening levels with crossover distortion of otherwise small percentage of the whole waveform. Perhaps, think of a triangle being played at an orchestral crescendo, in a good recording. There's a reason the composer scored it that way. Beyond that, such distortion shows up as making soundstage and depth murky. Employing class A helps eliminate the crossover issue as you state, and as you state, it does so at a cost. Heat is a primary enemy to all electronics. Class A may be a very good answer for those with listening skills, and for playback of good material not requiring live acoustic listening levels. It's nice to have a few such designs for sale. I wish I could afford to have a modern class A amplifier... sometimes.

Great review. As a Sugden owner (A48B) which is over 25yrs old, I can vouch for their quality, reliability & musicality. If you get a chance try and review their AV50 amplifier, I’ve not listened to it myself but from what I’ve read this has more power than A21 Signature. Sugden also provide a service for any amplifier and can repair most amplifiers from the 1960’s onwards. So if you want to give your Sugden some TLC, fill out the form on their website and send it to them once they’ve got in touch. You can also have your Sugden products in a range of colours, just decide which finish before purchase. Sugden, a great Yorkshire company.

Thanks for a fair and honest review. I have been a fan of Sugden since they were at Cleckheaton and I went with a friend to discuss buying one and was shown round by the great Jim. I have an ancient A21a and an equally old Audition Amp which have given no trouble for 30+ years. I find that they match well with my Naim Allae speakers whose fairly high efficiency and rather cool analytical sound match the amp well - probably with Naim amplification they might not please everyone. I would suggest that if buying the Sugden you would pay much attention to speaker efficiency so as to get the full benefit of the lowish power- even better get a pair of Masterclass power amps and a control (a lottery win might help).

@@abritishaudiophile7314 yes, you ve the gift to explain and develop things to a unique way... Now about the a 21, and even the uper models of sugden, many of people kind of complaining that it is weak on the bass.Even the series Grande, a very expensive piece, that they don t produce it any more... I am a big fan of class A, but you need much power to get a nice reproduction, which converts to ...money. In the future if you can tell us a little bit about MPA and SPA and their differences. Great review Tarun. Like the porridge in Goldilocks and the Three Bears there always seem to be tradeoffs/compromises in audio. Hegel = tight/cool, Sugden = warm/loose, etc. I suppose there is a ''just right amp'' out there but I probably can't afford it. Have you heard any that you would qualify as ''just right''? Plinius, Copland, Pass Labs, Naim Supernait 3?

I'm very familiar with class A, having owned a Sugden A21 I bought in 1972 (£56), great amplifier. I'm fully aware of the difference between class A, class B and class AB - I think your explanation with the ball was a superb way of giving people an idea of the main difference.

In my head, single ended operation (which is where the ball metaphor comes in) isn't the same thing as Class A operation (which is what generates the heat; because the output devices are "always on", rather than switching in and out as they detect current). Perhaps I'm wrong, but Arun's explanation seems to confuse the two.
