The chain that came unclipped is a bright , tether chain that goes back to campaign days to attach the horses to a picket line for rest food and water . It clips to the back of the head collar and lies loose around the neck , it could in an emergency situation if the reins were slashed by a sword be used to give the Troopers some control of his horse . It's not as some people think a martingale or tie down .
@katecoe8322

Wow-I didn’t know the history of that and just assumed it was a martingale, although I’d never seen people fuss with a martingale to this extent. Thank you, and please keep offering the historical information and other good info 😃

@katecoe8322 . You're very welcome Kate😊. I've only seen one HCav horse with a martingale and that's Sangyin ( I think that's the right spelling ) . If you look at The Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery they use a white picket rope . I don't know if you've watched Johns " Behind The Scenes " videos from Hyde Park Barracks there's the lady Trooper explaining kit and tack to the judges for The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Trophy , very informative and interesting . Have a good day 😊 .

@@jgwood10I was glad when the moderator called it out for what it is-stupid and dangerous for the children. It staggers the mind that these parents are so cavalier about their children’s lives. I was trampled when I was twelve, and was lucky I didn’t have worse injuries than I did. I passed out from the pain and was dragged out of the stall, and I did have a hoof print on my thigh for over two years. At twelve my body could survive a lot more than the very young children of the tourists. (I was so horse crazy, I went to the horse and apologized for being in his way, while it was a threatening goat that actually set him off. That stable taught us respect and responsibility, so I looked to where I had been wrong and learned from it. I so miss those years…)

Just a thought, but I think they need to adjust the bit, which has seemed to bother him from the beginning. It’s easy to dismiss as the horse just battling to control the bit, but it may be really uncomfortable. Also, I never thought about this, duh, but I wonder if horses (and other animals) get headaches? There’s no reason for that not to happen, and try to imagine going out to this scene if not being 100%, but not down enough for the staff to be alarmed. We’re so lucky to be able to verbalize our needs. Horses are sensitive creatures, regardless of their size, and a lot of the tourists treat them as if they’re inanimate photo props. It would make anyone not want to cooperate…. I know I don’t need to write this to the regular subscribers, and it’s great to see the support and concern for the horses and guards in the comments here 😊
@missymissy5921

I agree. Looking at this, it seems like the bit is pinching the horses tongue or the sides of their mouth. They chomp, and shake the head, trying to loosen it. Imagine having to stand there with something pinching your tongue for an hour. Both the horse and the trooper are legends for managing it!
