Very good E.R. So if you were able to buy a Meteor or a Classic, which one would you go for? I am really looking forward to trying the Classic El outro
@economicalrides
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks ER. No, you are definitely El Original ! Such a tough question to answer right now because we are talking nearly 6k km on the Meteor and 350 km on the Classic. I think, if I didn’t have the Meteor and was looking to upgrade from a Bullet 500 or Classic 500, the Classic 350 wins every time. The Meteor can be a bit cramped, the space from the seat to the foot pegs is tight. I have a 30” inside leg and I still feel a bit cramped at times, the hip to knee angle is a bit more than my old joints can truly enjoy. It comes down to two aspects really. If you prefer the Bullet or “classic” style, buy the Classic. If you are longer in the leg, feel uncomfortable on the Meteor, buy the Classic. If you are agnostic about the aforementioned two factors, buy the Meteor, it is better value for money if it suits your taste and it is comfortable for your body shape. Basically two really amazing bikes for a hobby motorcycle, which one to choose depends on your body shape and style preference really. I think you are more in the “classic style” group and the Classic would be a fantastic Sunday bike for you. I recently had a Classic 500 owner on here who loves his 500 but has test ridden the new 350 and thinks it is better in every way. He is now trying ro convince his partner that he needs both because he really doesn’t want to sell his 500 ! You should definitely test the Classic 350 with an open mind but if you love the style and the looks it really is a cracking Sunday or bike meet bike, no doubt ! I hope this helps me old mucker ! Cheers 👍 (definitely) El Otro !

What a super review, so relaxing seeing that beautiful scenery , the bike seems made for roads like that. You mention towards the end about fixing soft luggage, The Classic 350 uses the identical pannier rail with a 2 point fixing as the Meteor 350. The top bolts in the hole covered by rubber grommet just in front of the rear shock (Royal Enfield part No. KXA00042) Don't know why, but they only seem to sell them for the right hand side of the bike. . Thanks again for a most informative review
@economicalrides

Hi Pete, thanks, glad you enjoyed the video ! Yes, that is the problem with the RE pannier setup. It is only for the RHS I believe. So the frame is one sided so no use for soft luggage, unless you buy two and chop one of them about to fit on the "wrong" side ( which has been successfully done by others who wanted TWO RE panniers on their Meteor ). It's just not easy to fit luggage to the Meteor without mounting extra hardware, which then looks rubbish should you ever ride with the bags off. I know from my Bullet days that these guards do just about keep soft throw-over bags out of harm's way if you can find somewhere to lash the bags down, which again, I think on the Classic should not be a problem. So on the Classic I think you have a better chance of being able to fit universal soft luggage which you may have lying around WITHOUT having to mount extra frames to the bike. In that regard the Meteor is a bit awkward although I am currently working on my own luggage solution for Meteor road trips ! Thanks for watching and commenting Pete, I really appreciate you taking the time ! Cheers 👍🏻 ER.

This is hard for me to watch! I fell in love with the red/chrome the first time I saw a picture. Then I saw the bronze/chrome and thought that’s the one! Watching Warro’s gray bike makes me want that and of course the Halcyon green or black are gorgeous! Just as I think I have my mind made up, you post this video and I’m back to the red/chrome at the top of the list! The worst part is we have no idea when the bike will reach the US. This is the way to review a bike! Those folks who simply recite the spec sheet are useless! I don’t care if the seat height is 790cm or 802cm. Can I reach the ground? Is it comfortable? Will it be too cramped? These are the important things. I really enjoy your style of video! Nice, low key and relaxing. Like meditation. It suits this bike. Looking forward to more videos. And I wouldn’t mind if they are an hour long. I’m not some Gen Z with the attention span of a goldfish 😁

Fantastic comment Dan, thank you soooooo much ! You are definitely my kind of guy 👍 Honestly, I think the red/chrome is hard to beat. The bronze/chrome is different, I like it. But, because I always think about resale value, I thought that the red/chrome would be less divisive. I think the bronze is love it or hate it, but the red/chrome will most likely be universally popular. I like the bronze but it is sort of brown and I think it might not be to everybody’s taste. I’m so glad to hear that you don’t mind my videos being a bit long, I am a bit obsessed with trying not to ramble on too much. As you say, a lot of people these days seem to have an eight minute attention span and accuse me of being too wordy. But hey, that’s what the fast forward button is for, right ? Thanks for giving me the reassurance that I’m not too awful to watch and listen to 🤗 Don’t worry, videos will be coming, I have no intention of stopping. Unfortunately this month has been wet every day and it looks like it isn’t going to change until next month. So I might struggle to get videos out in the next couple of weeks but as soon as I can be, I will be back out on the road and filming 🥰 Thanks for your lovely comment Dan, I’m very proud to have you onboard 👍 Cheers, ER.

just a thought, Indian manufacturing is world standard these days, perhaps bybre saves money by alowing greater tolences. this could manifest in greater variation between samples. Hi Roy, it would seem as though Bybre is not the issue. The callipers and brake lines work really well once the master cylinder has been upgraded ( according to various sources ). So it is actually RE's own master cylinder which is letting the braking system down a bit. The brakes still work well enough if you pull them hard enough and the ABS at both ends means that you can do that without worrying too much. They just need a bit more pressure than you would like and can feel pretty wooden. Still, it all adds to the nostalgia. The TLS front drum on my Bullet 500 felt the same, just with the difference that it didn't work well however hard you pulled the lever 😂 Glad you enjoyed this one Roy, another nice ride on another new road coming on Tuesday - and there is A BIT of sunshine to be seen, at least briefly. Cheers Roy, ER

Regarding the brakes perhaps the difference is all down to weight distribution between the two 🤔
@economicalrides
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Julian, no, it’s not that, the bite I am referring to is felt through the brake lever, I’m not referring to the actual retardation of the brakes. It seems to be softening over time though, so probably just a mild variance in brake pads between the two bikes. It’s not really an issue though, since when really needed and applied with pressure, both bikes’ brakes work well enough. Cheers Julian, 👍 ER

A few points: 1/ As a Meteor owner I think the Classic 350 is absolutely gorgeous. I admit to a little envy in this regard. :- ( 2/ The variation in brakes may be the degree to which they've bedded in and will all become similar over time. Also different pad grades are available. 3/ I'm told the Tripper was supposed to be installed as standard on the Classic 350 but Covid 19 has left the world short of chips so they've put a blank in the hole instead. (My Tripper works fine and is a very useful aid). 4/ Lastly it's good to know the 350 engine will pull a slightly higher gear than the Meteor currently has. A 16T gearbox sprocket is coming out shortly that will make the Meteor a little less 'busy' at motorway speeds. I will install it with a high performance air filter to improve breathing and may delete the catalyst too. Should be worth a bit more torque at the top end.
@economicalrides
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, I think RE has inconsistent quality in the brake pads they are fitting. It’s nothing to do with bedding in because my Meteor front brake has never had bite from day one whereas my Classic noticeably did, right from the off. You also hear a lot of people with different experiences regarding the quality of RE brakes. But ultimately it doesn’t matter because when called upon they all work really well. I’m convinced that if I fitted some quality pads to the Meteor’s front brake, it would be transformed. But it’s not a priority really because my testing proved to me that the brakes work well enough. I think you’re probably right about them intending to fit the Tripper as standard, makes sense since it’s standard on the Meteor, the Himalayan and now the new Scram. But I definitely don’t miss it since navigating with my smartphone is so much easier and more reliable ! I did think about going one bigger on the front sprocket of the Meteor for those who do a lot of motorway work, good to know that somebody is working on it. I will be very interested to find out how the Meteor performs with the higher gearing. Judging by the Classic, starts on steep inclines will require a fair few revs and some clutch feathering but I don’t see that as a major problem. Thanks for your comments Andrew 👍 I rode through the rain this morning to get the Classic’s first service done. Needs another wash now ! Cheers Andrew 👍 ER

Yes. I've only ridden my Meteor in the dark once in eight months, so it was a bit of a coincidence that I discovered the problem with the Classic's headlight on my very first ride ! Normally it would have taken me months to discover that it was poorly adjusted 😛 Fortunately I made it home ok and as you say, it was easy to correct, particularly because I had the Meteor to park next to it and compare where the beams were landing on the rear wall of the garage. Otherwise I would have been just guessing but setting it to be the same as the Meteor shouldn't result in me blinding anybody and next time I ride in the dark, I should be able to see where I'm going ! Unfortunately it was slightly more expensive than I was prepared to spend. Still WAY cheaper than a Bonneville of course but once you get over 5000 EUR it starts to become a bit of an investment which is harder to justify. If money were no object, I would definitely buy one over a Triumph, which in recent years have become larger and larger and more and more expensive. I can't justify spending over 10 grand on a bike which I might only use ten times a year for an hour at a time ! Who knows, once the KZitem millions start rolling in, perhaps I'll be able to justify a 650 twin 😉 ? Cheers MAMRE, ER.

Hi LB, thanks for the praise, I wasn't too happy with the video myself but I really needed to get something out since it won't stop raining here and there is probably not going to be another video for a while. I ran out of time making this video really, it ended up being a bit of a rush job but I'm glad nobody noticed 😉😂 Re the taller rider thing, I think a lot depends upon your mobility and health issues really. I feel less cramped on the Classic because I do sometimes get hip pain on the Meteor ( after a long while mind ! ) because my hips prefer my knees to be lower than they end up on the Meteor. A more feet downwards position is definitely kinder to my hips. I think I am broken because I have spent my entire life sat in front of computers with my feet going straight down to the floor below ! I definitely feel more stretched out on the Classic, simply because my legs are going more down than out. Anybody with hip and knee pain and longer legs would probably find the Classic easier to live with. But as ever, people are all different and everybody should at least sit on both bikes before deciding. Sometimes a bike can produce a pain in you which you didn't even know that you had ! Ergonomics are important and as we get older we may start to struggle more and more with certain body positions. The seat on the Meteor feels significantly lower to me which again doesn't really help those with longer legs, so what you gain in stretching room forwards you almost lose again in stretching room downwards if you catch my drift. Anyway, definitely EVERYBODY should at least sit on a bike before purchasing, if a test ride is unavailable ( like it always is here ! ). Cheers LB, glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏻 Love to Leo ❤️🐕 ER.

That’s why I am trying to get it run in as quickly as possible but unfortunately it won’t stop raining/snowing at the moment. If it is a couple of hundred rpms calmer at the same speed, that would definitely be a major plus for the Classic. Sorry, I mentioned what was missing rather than what was there. Don’t worry, the Classic has exactly the same USB charger in exactly the same position as the Meteor. What it lacks are the Tripper pod and the gear indicator of the Meteor, as I mentioned. Your comments about the front brake gave me food for thought ER. It is likely the case that individual examples of otherwise identical calipers and discs vary in feel and effectiveness though I would be surprised if it was so very variable given modern manufacturing practices. However the weight distribution Classic cf Meteor is different as you say, with a higher weight percentage over the front, so you are riding the front wheel and brake rather more than on the Meteor. When you do brake, even more weight is shifted over the front wheel. So, (long winded I know) I would expect a more effective front stopping effect coupled with a more confident/stronger use of that front brake. Could this explain the difference between the two bikes?
@economicalrides
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, I totally get what you are saying but no 😉 Bite is something you feel at the lever. It results from the interaction between master cylinder, calliper and disc. The Classic front brake has bite which I can feel and the Meteor‘s does not. I genuinely believe that Bybre brake installations are inconsistent, everything I‘ve heard about RE brakes in different reviews would suggest that. There appears to be no consistency in the opinions. Now whether that is down to the hardware or the installation of the hardware I can’t say but I do get the feeling that the bite and feel of RE‘s Bybre installations is inconsistent. Definitely something RE could look into although possibly other manufacturers installing Bybre brakes may be experiencing similar issues, I don’t know. I honestly think it is just down to luck whether you get an RE brake with bite and consistent feel or not, based on my own experience and what I am hearing from others. Thanks as ever for watching and commenting Ron 👍 Cheers. ER.

@@jochenschrey2909 Hi Jochen, interesting question ! I did try REALLY HARD to actuate the ABS on the front brake of my Meteor and failed miserably ! I could get the rear ABS to actuate but the front ABS never came in. I think I was braking with too much feel as usual but the bike was stopping on a dime so kudos to me 😛😂😂😂 I haven't done any extreme testing with the Classic yet, it's only done 380km so far and I am gently breaking everything in. Before I bought the Classic I was contemplating doing a video about ABS, hence my attempts to activate it on the front brake of my Meteor. I was experimenting for a future video. Now that I have both bikes I think it is more likely that I will do a video about the braking performance and ABS in general. Definitely an interesting topic because most older riders think "I don't need ABS, why is it now compulsory ?", which I can understand but maybe, just maybe, if you use it in the right way, one day it could just pull you up one metre short of that big accident you would have otherwise had ! So I think this mandatory ABS thing is worthy of a video at some point. But as I said, I currently have no idea how the Classic's brakes are when pushed to the limits. Cheers Jochen, stay tuned for more info on the brakes as I start to push them a bit harder 👍🏻 ER.

@@economicalrides Thanks for getting back & your good work, ER. Take your time, I am subscribed. I never had an ABS bike but think I dropped / fell at least 2 times due to overbraking. I usually don't fuzz about premium tech, as long as a ride seems still street legal but I never understood why RE put ABS & conventionally weak and unspectacular front brake into the Himalayan. Sure, ABSs will fail but until then I'd love to feel a need for them.

Hi EB, I fully agree with you regarding the difference between the two models, but amazingly, at 6' 3" & 34" inseam, I found the Meteor a really nice ride. I can't see myself being in the market for a 350 anytime soon, but I'm looking forward to a try on a Hunter when I'm rolling again. (and maybe a Super Meteor too!) So I might break my own rules, and publish some sort of review. Cheers again.👍

By all accounts the Hunter feels like a proper lightweight motorcycle, sort of like an old school 250 Brit single. Slim and easily managed. Would be an excellent bike for me if I ever lose confidence with my other bikes. I also think it has a nice distinct sound to it. Great value for money too, so could be my „old man bike“ someday before I finally accept that a 125cc scooter is the only two wheeler I should be riding at my age 🙂 I think I‘ve still got a couple of years left in me before it comes to that though. I need to explore some trails before I hang up my boots ! Cheers Martin 👍 ER

Hello ER you mentioned in the first video when you rode the classic home that you found the gear change lever awkward with your riding boots on. There's been some discussion on the unofficial RE forum about the position of the gear lever on this machine when wearing boots. How are you finding it now you've more experience with the Classic.?
@economicalrides
2 жыл бұрын
Hi LE, currently I am dealing with it. It does seem as though the gap was set for pumps and sandals rather than mc boots though 😂 It's ok. Ainsworth Rider has moved his gear lever up a tooth on the spline and says it is way better and also looks "right" like that. I said I'd have a look at mine and possibly do the same, but since then it hasn't stopped raining, so......... I can ride it with my boots on now, no real problem, but definitely one tooth higher on the spline would be welcome. Seems to be a genuine problem with the Classic as is the inability to set the offside mirror in such a way that you can actually see behind you. The nearside mirror is no problem at all but the offside one needs a longer arm or something, you just can't set it to be able to see behind you without moving your head down and out. Very strange ! Cheers LE, ER.

Hi John, never tried the Classic 500 myself unfortunately but by all accounts it was a great bike. On a previous Classic 350 video ( my collection day video I think ) there was a comment from a viewer who has a Classic 500 and loves it but took a test ride an the Classic 350 and he found it better in every way, so that must be a valid opinion. He is now trying to convince his other half that he needs both because he is reluctant to give up his 500 😂 I hope this helps. I would imagine that performance wise there is very little difference between the two, I think that maybe the 500 hangs onto a gear better up steep hills but the 350 will feel much smoother and more modern mechanically I would imagine ! Thanks QPB. Apparently those who know both the 500 and the 350 feel as though the 350 is much nicer. Let’s face it, it is a thoroughly modern motorcycle just with a brilliant classic look. Unfortunately I’ve never tried the old Classic 500 so can’t say for sure, just that it sounds from others as though the 350 has moved the game on a fair bit. Hopefully somebody who knows both bikes will come up with a video soon. Unfortunately I can’t get hold of a 500 to do it myself 😢 Obviously the 350 rides A LOT smoother than the 500 and I’m guessing that that’s its main advantage. Cheers QPB 👍 ER.

@@economicalrides really interesting and appreciated. I have a 500 but ive been using the transalp for everything and being too precious about the 500. I've got a service due next month on it, might try and get an afternoon on it. But I'm not very experienced and a lot of things still go overy head. But id be interested to see how that torque difference between the bikes impacts it. Ride with warro. Is an Ozzy and has had 17? Well a few 500s, really nice guy and knows his stuff. He warned me that the 500 engine runs on heat cycles to run in not just milage. It's not till over 2k miles the engine is run in and has totally different experience and character. The modern engines certainly do have their advantages and I sat on one this week and really liked it, loved the large rubber back break pedal!! Hi, just came back from my 2 week holiday in Spain. Unfortunately I did not get any riding done, mainly because where we stayed (Alhaurin El Grande) it proved impossible to find any interesting bikes to rent. But it was fun otherwise, and great to escape the last of the winter here. I absolutely see why you live there, must be great to be able to ride the whole year. And congrats on your new bike, it is a beauty. Here in Sweden the weather seems to finally turn to the better so I´ve put my bike on charger and have high hopes about the coming weekend. The temp could go up to over 10c which for me is the pain point, over that and it is time to start the season. Looking forward to more videos from you, I´ve decided to wait for a year with a new bike mainly because RE is coming out with quite many models this year. I have eyes on a SuperMeteor if it will be what I hope it is, as I currently ride a 750cc bike I´ve come to the conclusion that those smaller ones would not do it for me. A 650 will hit my sweet spot. And I only have room for one in my garage. But my old Kawa will do very well for me one more year, I bought it in 2012 as temporary bike until I find another, more interesting one and I still have it and enjoy it so I guess there are many kinds of temporary, eh? Anyway, impressed by this video, it is very well made and interesting. Good job!

Thanks Robert, nice to hear back from you ! I'm sorry that the bike rental didn't work out for you but glad you had some reasonable weather. It has been raining here ALL MONTH and the forecast says that it is not going to stop until next month some time. I am taking the Classic in for its first service tomorrow, not because it is going to be dry, just because it is the day with the least predicted rainfall between now and the end of the month and I really want to get it done so that I can ride as much as I like once the rain finally stops ! I cleaned the bike the previous weekend but had a feeling that it was going to prove to be pointless and barring an absolute miracle my new Classic is going to get absolutely filthy again tomorrow 🤬 It sounds as though you are likely to get more riding in this month than I am, so be sure to make the most of the drier warmer weather 👍🏻 I agree about the Super Meteor or Meteor 650. I think it will be an absolutely cracking bike, a proper all-rounder but I now appreciate cheap and as small as I can get away with motorcycles too much. I can't justify spending over 6k on a new bike when there are such nice bikes for 4-5k which fill my needs 90+% of the time. If money were no object then I would be sorely tempted to add a Meteor 650 to my stable but unfortunately it's just too expensive for me to consider it an EconomicalRide 😠 I hope you get one and then you can tell me all about it 😛 Thanks for getting back to me, really glad you enjoyed your holiday. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the big thaw starts this weekend and you can get your season started ! Cheers Robert 👍🏻 ER.

Every time I come back to the Meteor it just puts a smile on my face, just like the first time. Everybody should have one IMO ! Take care, sounds like you are just about ready for the first service at 300 miles ! From about 350 miles you should really start noticing that the engine has more and more torque. You'll be going up inclines in fifth where previously you had to drop to fourth. And it will keep on improving up to about 2500 km or 1550 miles. I'm amazed at how well my Meteor hangs on to fifth gear up hills these days, after 3750 miles or so. When I jump on the Classic, with just 500 miles on it, it feels really gutless in comparison but again, is improving with every ride. Cheers John 👍🏻 ER.

Thought I'd seen a video of yours mentioning issues with your back. Is the RE design of both bikes rear suspension /seat position triggering back issues. I have heard this mentioned by others and wondered if same or not for yourself?
@economicalrides

Hi Tony, no, none of my back issues are caused or aggravated by the bikes. I have sciatica, which just flares up from time to time, but since that last attack which I did mention on here back in the day, I haven’t had a reoccurrence but have been riding the bikes a lot ! The sciatica comes from 30 odd years of being slouched in an office chair in front of a computer screen. The bikes don’t aggravate it, actually sometimes I think the gentle vibrations of the bike can help to alleviate it ! But fortunately I’ve not had another attack for a while now 🤞 I hope this helps. Obviously riding through potholes at high speed will hurt your back on any bike but I can’t report a general problem with either the Meteor or the Classic, from my side. Cheers Tony, ER.

Hi Dr Nightmare, If I could only have one, it would be the Meteor. It’s more of an awesome all-round motorcycle, easy to live with, super comfortable ( if you are not too tall ) and always puts a smile on my face. The Classic is much more of an enthusiast’s bike, a bike for taking to bike meets and showing off. As an all-rounder the Meteor does a better job in my opinion. It’s also cheaper and comes with more bells and whistles ( gear indicator and Tripper ). Beyond that it’s really a matter of personal taste which bike to go for. I hope this helps you a little bit. As somebody who has both, I say Meteor but everybody’s tastes will be different ! Good luck deciding, but either way you’ll end up with a lovely bike, they are both very enjoyable to ride and own. Hi Jon and thanks for watching ! Sorry to hear that you are not doing too well but at least you still have your "two wheeled ( now four ! ) therapy". I hope that the weather is kind and that you get plenty of opportunities to ride both bikes. Unfortunately it will just not stop raining here, it doesn't look like it is going to stop before the end of the month either. That would make it six weeks of rain with just two dry days where I managed to get out and film something ! I've decided to do the four hour round trip for the first service tomorrow, not because it will be dry, just because it is supposed to be raining the least tomorrow ! I really need to get the service done because the rain could easily continue for another month and I currently can't ride the Classic any more because I am at the km limit for the first service. So on top of everything else, pretty grim times here at the moment also. Oh well, if I get the service done tomorrow that will at least be one more thing out of the way. Subscribed with thanks😃👍
@economicalrides

Thanks for watching and subbing Charlie ! I suggest you watch my recent video "2022 Royal Enfield Classic 350 - Helicopter REBORN ?" There I am riding up a series of long inclines, mostly in fourth gear, occasionally in fifth. The bikes improve a lot between 650km and 2500km and mine has only just hit 800km so the engine is improving every time I go out. Suddenly hills which required fourth gear before can now be climbed in fifth etc. It really is noticeable how the engine develops more and more torque as it loosens up. My Meteor 350 pulls like a train now and I would expect the Classic to get there too once it's fully run in. I haven't tried it with a pillion yet and I think it would be best to wait for it to be making full power before doing so. When new the engine can feel a bit gutless with weight on it or going uphill. But it quickly starts to improve. People say that the Meteor 350 barely notices the weight of a pillion and I can well imagine that to be the case. These engines are torquey enough to carry a pillion fairly comfortably ONCE RUN IN ! So give the engine 2500km before you decide whether or not it is strong enough for what you need, please. I also have a video about the gear shifter and yes, I had to move it ( there is a video showing how to do that ) because with my boots on I was having to contort my left foot to get under it. And finally, the phone mount is a QuadLock which is a very secure mount and it's very easy to put the phone on the bike and quickly take it off again. I have the optional vibration dampener too, to protect the image stabilisation of the mobile phone camera ( too many vibes and too much shaking can break the image stabilisation in smartphones ). So I hope that all helps. I'm sure you'll really enjoy your Classic and please bear in mind that the motor will improve massively between 650 and 2500 kilometres, so don't be too disappointed if you have to drop gears quite often to begin with. Cheers Charlie 👍🏻 ER.

Hi D View, unfortunately I have never tried a Classic 500, I only had a Bullet 500 myself. People who have tried both the Classic 500 and Classic 350 say that there is very little difference in performance but of course that the 350 is WAY smoother. We have a comment somewhere from a viewer who owns a Classic 500 but has test ridden a Classic 350 and now he wants a Classic 350, so I think it is safe to say that the 350 is probably overall a nicer bike than the old 500 was. @@dview3176 Thanks D View. In the real world the 350 feels almost as strong but it delivers its power in such a smooth way whereas the 500 always felt as though it was shaking itself to bits every time you asked it to deliver more power 🙄 The 500 would probably be much better pulling a sidecar but other than that, in the real world, the 350 is not much less powerful and I love the way it so effortlessly delivers its power and speed. The vibes of the Classic 500 undoubtedly deliver a more authentic "classic" riding experience though. But I am happy to sacrifice authenticity for practicality and comfort to be honest. I like the classic looks without the classic hassles these days ! Thanks for watching and commenting D View, glad to have you onboard ! Cheers 👍🏻 ER.

Love your vids ! Please tell , apart from difference the ergonomics , how is the engine and tuning, gearing etc different in both bikes and does it actually make the difference in real world performance ot both bikes behave the same ?
@economicalrides
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Vikas, thanks for watching and commenting, I'm glad that you are enjoying my RE videos so far 👍🏻 The only difference in performance really is that the larger rear wheel on the Classic results in a slightly higher gearing overall than on the Meteor. As I mentioned in this video, you really notice the higher gearing when you pull away from a standstill on a steep incline in first gear. The Classic needs more throttle and you need to feather the clutch a bit to pull away. On the Meteor if you let the clutch out slowly on idle it will still pull away cleanly. I can't really say for sure, because the Classic is brand new and I haven't done 2000+ kilometres to run it in yet, but I think in every gear the Meteor will pull a bit more strongly, simply because it is slightly lower geared overall. So that will give the impression of the Meteor being more lively than the Classic, I imagine. Once the Classic's engine has fully freed up I will give my definitive opinion but I already think that the Meteor will feel just a little bit livelier in most situations than the Classic. At the moment it feels as though the Classic's gearing is slightly too high for it to pull, I think it has to work harder at the same speed than the Meteor does. But as I say, not fair to compare a Meteor motor with 5500km with a brand new Classic motor ! My feeling is that the Classic struggles a little bit with the higher gearing whereas on the Meteor the gearing feels absolutely perfectly matched to the engine. Since both bikes have exactly the same gear ratios in the gearbox, the larger rear wheel of the Classic does increase the gearing significantly , I can already feel that ! I hope this helps. Stay tuned for my final verdict, maybe in the Summer, when I've done 2000+ km on the Classic too ! Cheers Vikas, ER.

@@economicalrides a BIG thank you , I really appreciate the detailed reply which touches upon every aspect ..yes I did hear you mention about gearing in the video ..and it makes it even more clear now .. Does the classic rpms feel more relaxed on actual riding than the meteor or they feel the same . , I mean, does the classic have lower rpms for the same speed, due to bigger rear wheel or is it same and barely noticeable ?

2 жыл бұрын
@@vikasupadhyay1398 Hi Vikas, lower RPMs everywhere but I think you may have to change down a gear on certain hills whereas on the Meteor it wouldn’t be necessary. If you ride in an area with little elevation change, the Classic will feel more relaxed. If you live in an area with many hills, you may find yourself BETWEEN gears on the Classic, i.e. it won’t pull fourth gear up a certain hill, so you have to drop to third. But third gear may be lower than you would like, so the engine will be revving higher than is ideal. I actually think that the gearbox ratios chosen are perfect for the Meteor but the same ratios are not ideal for the Classic, since it ends up higher geared overall. But I really need to see how the Classic copes with the taller gearing once it is fully run in. At the moment it is just my instinctive feeling, that the Meteor ratios are not quite right for the Classic. I believe that many Indian reviewers concluded that the Meteor feels livelier. I think that is just because the Classic struggles more to pull the same gear ratios, due to the larger rear wheel. Thanks for replying to my reply 😛 ER

@@vikasupadhyay1398 Hi Vikas, yes I think the Meteor would work better for you. The difference in gearing isn't huge but it might just be enough to force you into a lower gear on the Classic and that gear might not be quite high enough for the road that you are on. As I do more kilometres on the Classic I will get more information about this but I already think the Meteor is likely to be better suited to hilly environments and will just generally cope with them better 👍🏻 Good luck with your purchase and I'm glad that I was able to help you ! Hello ER. I've just discovered your channel and I'm very impressed. I'm a pensioner rider (mid 70's) and currently have an Interceptor. I much prefer my Inter to either of the two Bonnevilles I've owned, and I thought I'd never consider changing before my riding days come to an end (just country lane riding for pleasure, in Hampshire (UK). However, I currently have a booking at my local Royal Enfield dealership to test ride a Meteor and a Classic (I did have a test ride on a Meteor some time back prior to choosing the Inter. Very impressed with the Meteor's smooth engine). Your analysis of the finer points between your two RE's is excellent, and made excellent reading for me. Many reviews, whilst being useful, usually don't delve down into the subtleties of owning a bike like your excellent and detailed observations. I expect you're wondering why I'm considering changing to a 350. Although I ride defensively, I do enjoy 'bend swinging'. The problem hinges around my lack of right wrist control for the opportunity to overtake cars on the occasional stretch of road that opens out a bit. I generally try to observe the 'spirit' of the speed limits, but in my endevour to minimise that more risky time on the off-side of the road during an overtake, maybe (cough, cough) the speedo needle may, just may, creep higher than it should. If I had a less powerful machine, my natural (old age !) self preservation caution would prevent me attempting risky overtakes. Some of the police mobile laser speed checking gizmo's now coming into use can apparently check vehicle speeds up to a mile distant (and, as you are probaly aware (judging by your accent) in the UK the title of 'safety cameras' is somewhat of a misnomer. Many sites used for these mobile cameras are 'revenue collection/tick-box performance monitoring ' devices. ) . I want to keep my driving licence so, if I like either of the RE 350's enough I intend to change (because of my age, the Classic's styling is the machine that tugs at my heart-strings, but the test rides may bring about a change of heart, based on some of the Meteor's slightly stronger points that I have seen highlighted in other You Tube posts). Keep up your most excellent You Tube work, and stay safe on those (sometimes risky looking) roads you are riding.

Thanks for such a lovely comment Nearly Pastit ( you’re definitely not by the way ! ) I’m a Hampshire lad myself, born in Bournemouth before they moved it to Dorset 😛 I am impressed that, with all due respect, you at your age are only now contemplating slowing down ! I reached that point at about 37 years of age. That’s when I bought the Bullet 500 ( big mistake, check out my video “Royal Enfield haven’t always been kind to me” ! ) but ever since then I have started to really enjoy motorcycling. Before that I rode every bike as fast as it would go, everywhere. I’d get home all sweaty and would ask myself “Did I actually enjoy that ride I just took ?”. More often than not, the answer was no. It just added to my already high stress levels. So I re-evaluated my motorcycling priorities, bought the Bullet 500 and started to actually enjoy my weekend rides ( when the darn thing was in working order, which wasn’t very often ). Performance-wise the RE 350s pretty much match the old 500s and I think they will prove to be just about perfect for your requirements. Which one to go for ? Well, the Meteor is cheaper, easier to handle as we get older ( low seat height and laid back ergos ) and also has more gizmos ( Tripper ( meh ! ) and gear indicator ( useful )). For me it is simply the better all-rounder. If you are somebody who prefers the classic single look and sound then the Classic offers that whilst not being significantly worse than the Meteor. Objectively the Meteor is the better bike but if the classic vibe is your thing, the Classic will scratch that itch better than any other modern classic. RE gave us a choice of two lovely 350s. Which one suits anyone best is down to priorities and personal preference. Both are lovely bikes for the money ! Good luck deciding Nearly Pastit and if you have any particular questions which may help you to decide, please ask me ! Oh and welcome to the channel, great to have you onboard ! Keep an eye out for those sneaky “safety” cameras ! Cheers 🥃 ER.

So that is not off-road but it is a very poorly surfaced and pot-holed road, probably with gravel sections, so should be fun. Both the Meteor and the Classic will be fine on dirt or gravel if you take it slowly enough. You can chug about in first or second gear without too much clutch usage normally. Some people are probably torn between buying a used Classic 500 or a brand new Classic 350. All I can say is that the general opinion is that the 350 is by far the better bike, being more modern and much smoother. But who can say whether that will always be the case ? The 350 does have a ton of Euro 5 gubbins on there and nobody knows how reliable that will prove to be over time. The 500 was very simple in comparison and could end up being the more reliable option. I certainly wouldn't mind a Classic 500 myself. I think the vibes would give me a more authentic classic experience and as I mentioned, it is fairly simple electronically, so might end up giving me less headaches in the long run. Having tried various regions I must admit that my local mountains, Los Filabres, have some of the nicest and best maintained roads to ride. And there are so many of them, it has taken me a couple of years to discover most of them, although there are still a couple I have yet to try ! I hope this helps. If you need any help with planning a trip, just let me know 👍🏻 Cheers Ian, ER.

Yep. I’m hoping that I develop a preference one way or the other, otherwise I will end up keeping both which is not ideal for the future of the channel 😂 Thanks William 👍 ER.

@@WilliamAndrewPhilipBodie Yes, I could probably keep them both but at some point I would like to present another new bike on the channel. I'm waiting for the baby Triumphs to come out now, the Indian made singles. When they are announced ( and pricing ! ) I might have to decide which RE to keep, since three bikes is definitely more than my garage can handle 😂 But no rush at the moment, I will spend the summer enjoying these two bikes and await Triumph’s announcement 👍🏻 Cheers William, ER.

@@WilliamAndrewPhilipBodie Yep, that’s the plan. As long as they price it as an EconomicalRide I think it would be a great next bike for the channel and of interest to a lot of people. If it comes in at 6000 EUR then I really don’t see the point because for that sort of money you are in RE 650 territory ! Over to you Triumph 😉 Cheers William 👍 ER.

LOL Simon ! Does Zen not realise that my videos are far more important than any owl ? 😂 Ruby has been known to bark at the wind so I think she should be the last pup to throw stones in glass houses 😛 Thanks for watching ( despite the canine distractions ). Yes, fortunately for me the two bikes still feel very distinct. I was slightly worried that looks would be the only difference between the two bikes but I can genuinely say that they each have their own character and suit different moods really. Cheers Simon, ER & Ruby 🐕
