While it's still pretty sad, I'd like to point out that the cover on the original vinyl LP for L.A. Woman was a little more complex than what you see printed on later versions. The yellow portion was actually the inner paper sleeve showing through a large hole in the cardboard. The band photo was printed on clear cellophane which was glued to the inside.

This is one of the biggest issues when re-releasing albums originally on vinyl, to CD. A lot of bands whose albums were originally released on vinyl had really cool/inventive ways of packaging their albums, but when it came time, in the 80s, to re-release them on CD, the covers were poor & cheap facsimiles of the original packaging.

The dull grey color cover is the reprint cover distributed in the U.S. starting in the late seventies. The original vinyl release by Island in the U.K. and United Artists in the U.S. has the much cooler burlap cover. It was also released as a deluxe gatefold sleeve and slightly embossed to give it a rough texture, again to simulate burlap. Original Island vinyl copies in fine or better condition are also a highly sought out version due to being a better sounding pressing. This really bad reprint cover is obviously the result of record company cost-cutting.

To me, it was another symbol of the entire album concept. Martin is right that Immersion version of the cover is much better, stunning even, but somehow I cannot imagine it on the original vinyl back in the day. I remember that on the local version I never got a small plastic square with writing Pink Floyd The Wall which could be on the cover, but it could be easily positioned on any flat surface, window for instance or the door. Kind of cool. Even on the wall, if it is flat enough. Writing on the wall...

Popoff and Pardo are at it again with another great show on album covers. And during the show, Martin sums it up in just four words...”Disastrous results can occur.” Well said! Thanks to you two for another interesting discussion and fun show.

I've always wondered why so many artists release records with boring covers like the Beatles White album, The Stones Beggar's Banquet, the Who Live at Leeds, Pink Floyd's the Wall, Led Zeppelin' Coda and all those Motown Greatest Hits albums with nothing on them but the titles of the songs. An eye catching cover can help sell a record.

Heard an interview with Ozzy years ago and he said the original album title was supposed to be War Pigs, but the label nixed it. So they changed the name but not the cover. I'm surprised neither of you had heard that before.

That's not the cover to LA Woman. The original is a clear see through ala a TV set. Plus the edges were rounded like a sixties TV set. Close to the Edge was originally a textured cover where the green makes way more sense.

@@seaoftranquilityprog Pete the photo was taken specially to be printed on clear plastic. Later editions just copied the album cover rather than use the actual photo the cover photo was taken from. I strongly suspect the original cover was the telegraph pole crucifixtion from the inner sleeve and the record company said... 'No freaking way'

You guys crack me up! Another great show! I agree with almost all your choices. I didn't want to buy Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" because of the goofy cover, but then a buddy of mine loved it and bought it, and he had a killer stereo system, and the next day he says, "You've got to come over and hear this!" Yeah, he was right! Todd Rundgren's "Something/Anything" - one of my favourite albums, but yeah, what's with the goofy cover? I love the photo inside, with Todd standing on his coffee table with the living room set up as a studio, and he's got the microphone on a broomstick or something. Great picture, and that was really how he recorded most of that record! "The Wall" - awful cover, one of the worst. I'm a huge King's X fan - one of my favourite bands - but yeah, "Dogman" wasn't a good cover, although I think I have the green one and it's a lot nicer. The old man on the cover of Anthrax "Among The Living" is supposed to be Randall Flagg, from Stephen King's "The Stand," if I'm not mistaken, but it's still a crappy album cover, and they did have a lot of bad ones. I always thought the cover of Yes "Close To The Edge" looked really classy. Finally, I know the guy who designed that Kinks cover, "Give The People What They Want." A buddy of mine from Queens, NY - John Velez. He designed the cover for my own album, "Ghosts," and did a cool job on that. I should ask him why he did what he did with that one. He's pretty proud of it!

Running out of ideas? I guess not. Every time I think you couldn’t possibly come up with another interesting theme, you guys pull this brilliant one out. It’s just amazing how certain artists put so much creativity and inspiration into an album and then totally check out on the artwork that bridges the music to the listener. Loved you brought up the “Gimme Back My Bullets” horrible cover. Hell, they would have been better off using that pistol wrapping around the baseball logo if they had to settle. I must say, I normally am well aligned with Martin, but I really like the cover for “Red.” I always thought the intensity of the music was showing through on that picture of Fripp. It was kind of like a menacing prog version of Meet the Beatles! Thanks again guys for always thinking of new ways to keep things fresh.

Kings X - I know exactly what you mean Pete. I used to listen to the albums in the 90s, some great productions, brilliant musicians, good writing and I’d think why can’t I get into this. Jellyfish - on the other hand were killer. I’d love to see them on the show but they only have two albums...that’s a quick ranking the albums.....great show as usual......🤟

Great idea! I would love to see a second episode! My choices: Hawklords - 25 Years On: They've smoked something bad when choosing this... Magnum - Vigilante: This is looking like an advertisement for an 80s Barbie playhouse or an incredibly bad 80s roleplaying game. Apparently the band did not like it but the record company chose this... Steve Walsh - Glossolalia: What is this? A dead indian guy impaled by a cactus? Bitten by a rattlesnake? Or does he have a tail? Iron Maiden - Dance of Death or better Dance of the badly programed polygons

Hi Pete and Martin. I agree with you. I have a topic suggestion. Maybe you and Martin or somebody else can do an episode of Epic Songs (10 plus minutes)that are Terrible. Songs where you had to subject yourself to the music just to get through the album. I am sure you and Martin can find 5-10 good ones. Just a suggestion. Thoughts. ( In retrospect to your prog epics video). Thanks

Thank goodness the awesome music more than makes up for it) Acid Bath-When the Kite String Pops Cattle Decapitation- Humanure Pink Floyd- The Wall Beach Boys-Pet Sounds Porcupine Tree-Fear of a Blank Planet Yes-Close to the Edge (The album cover is boring, but the music inside of this album is some of the best you will ever hear) Rainbow-Rising (Never cared for this album cover but like close to the edge this is also another of my all time favorite albums)

I've been a visual artist for 30 + years, lending my skills to different facets such as Illustration, graphic design, textile design, and caricatures. A good friend of mine who went to art school with me worked at Virgin Records in London in the late '80s and early '90s. He told me that some musicians are very involved in the art process and would come into the studio and check up on the artist doing their cover art. If they didn't like the direction the artist had taken or got the information wrong, there would be hell to pay. Some assignments would come straight from the art director or creative freedom was bestowed to the artist. Pete also mentioned that these legendary albums deserved better album cover art. When these albums were being made no one knew they were going to be legendary albums. Not every record label has an in-house art department, so assignments go to freelance artists. There may be a short turnaround or a last-minute change by the band or Musician. Art can be very personal, it affects people differently; What one person likes, another person hates with a passion. A great topic and discussion, thanks, Pete!

Thank you for including an album of The J. Geils Band. Maybe it's an indication that their albums wil be ranked by Pete sooner or later? I'm looking forward to it. Because I love them all from A to Z. And no better idea than a stinking album cover for album about the stinking of love, I guess. Maybe an example of the very thin line between something bad and somthing humorous, I guess. Got another idea for your album cover shows: covers of (famous) albums that were inspired by / a rip off from other covers of (famous) albums. Or a show about covers that were more than just covers: think about the banana of Warhol on the VU debut album or the zipper on the Rolling Stones album. The J. Geils Band actually had a very odd cover with their Hotline album: when you lifted the telephone horn you could pull out the inner sleeve with the lyrics on. I'm sure there are many more examples, especially in the 70's.

I couldn't think of any classics so I'll just go with Saigon Kick's Bastards. A masterpiece of graphic design. In line with Martin's comments about the Meshugga cover, Nikolo Kotzev's Nostradamus looks a like a bad 90s point and click adventure game cover.

You could probably do a show on unintentionally funny album covers. Donny Osmond's Disco Train, ManoWar's Anthology, and Orlean's Waking and Dreaming springs to mind. BTW - King's X's Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is awesome.
