Drove a friend’s 67 911S back in the day. The 2.0 needed plenty of revs to get any power. The dog leg first gear was different but not difficult to use. That being said it was too easy to do 100+ without drama. I believe top speed was around 140 mph. The brakes were exceptional. Rear engine short wheelbase 911s required respect but weren’t the tail happy terrors you’re led to believe. After many thousands of miles in a 59 356A 1600S I felt the 911’s handling was excellent. It still is pretty mind boggling how much Porsche (Porscha) had advanced from 1959 to 1967. We would have been beaten to death if we had pronounced Porsche without the Ahh. Especially at the national events. Just sayin.’

Anybody know why Porsches of these era always start up so badly? they are always in the verge of stalling out, up and down on the rpms, up and down, they sound so unsteady until they warmup. What went wrong back then with that? anybody know?

The test results and analyses were exactly as I thought they would be. I've never physically driven either of these two cars but I love the "driving experience" of Porsches from my experiences in the PC game: "NFS: Porsche Unleashed." I love the design of the older Ford Mustangs; they look like awesome cars; I have seen very many cross blocks on televised auto auction shows. But all analysts of these shows have stated over and over again that the Mustang was created mostly for its 'looks' and to be more of a 'drag racer' than a true precise 'driving machine.' Supposedly the Camaro was created to create a more accurate 'drivers car' that the Mustang really wasn't. On that basis alone, I probably would prefer an older Camaro over an older Mustang. From their first inception, Porsches have always been pure 'driver's cars' -- not delivering much horsepower until perhaps the 70s- but cars modeled after race cars, hence, very fun to drive. That flies with me much more than the sheer "Americana" and driving experience of a Mustang which I'm sure is a blast to drive on country roads but just not good enough steering to really feel like a seasoned race driver....

In 1974 I had a 356-A with a Super 90 engine (103 hp) in it and a Speedster transmission, (lower gearing BBAB). I just read the 67 911 had 130 hp; the 67 911S had 160 hp. Man I miss my 356. I live in Hawaii so it was hard to drive the 911 here. You had to drive it on the highway once a week to "clean it out." The high adjustment on the 911 carb had to be set at 6,000 RPM.

Porsche transmissions prior to the G50 are some of the worst ever made. A rebuild will require a $8-12K check, need an engine rebuild set aside another $25K. Is a vintage 911 a wonderful drive, for sure. But in the real world you need to consider the cost of that drive. The answer here is Miata, and don't worry about impressing the locals.

What? The old 911s are very reliable cars. You can’t slam through the gears and not clutch all the way in like a maniac. We’ve had one in the family since the 70s, the gearbox has never ever been an issue

Cool comparison of two amazing classics - but not exactly an even playing field. I wonder if they would have felt differently if the Porsche had a sportomatic and the Shelby had the 4 speed? And price wise the Porsche 911S was $2200 more that the Shelby. You could almost buy another base model Mustang for that amount! The 912 was $5000 in '67 so that would be a more fair comparison. The extra 250hp the Shelby offered over the 912 would have been very appealing to the US highway driver.

Not really. I just did a valuation on both and there was a 4K dollar difference. Hagerty btw, seems to be pretty close. Largely will depend more on condition/mileage/options/color, could easily go either way.
