This summer I replaced the fender beading, the running board rubber, and took the bumpers off to sand and preserve the insides. The amount of sanding and preservation on just those few parts made me realize just how much work goes into a restoration. No wonder they can cost so much!

The reason why you see it this way is because you see it from the perspective of the seller- the guy that bought that mustang WAS NOT told the state of the car and it was expected to have none of the parts that are stock for a vert stang. The guy was probably some old guy that doesn’t know anything about cars and expected something great for 50 grand and was told he was getting exactly that. It’s not the price it’s not the person it’s the fact it was advertised as something it’s not.

The main issue here is honesty and expectations, people like to decide the prize of something without considering the labor and time it took to deliver the final product and there are people who doesn’t tell the whole story behind a project but you are right you get what you pay for and if there’s a doubt on any product ask for second opinion with a professional 🙏🏽

I could not afford a $10,000 paint job. About a decade ago I brush painted my VW Baja Bug with Rust-Oleum. Works great. Lasts about 2-3 years then I paint on another coat.

Your points are all good, I just like to add my story....years ago...I'm 20 and an idiot, I see an ad for a 1966 VW Van , a "cargo van". from Germany (no rear windows). I call the guy ( a German dude) at a hotel room in Long Beach, Ca, and he says, I use these 1966 cargo vw' vans to ship Porche engines from Germany as shipping containers.. The Van has been repainted and runs and looks nice, I pay him $650 for it and get a title and all, I drive home and as I get out I slam the door, a 4'X 4" bunch of Bondo falls to the ground ,surprise, don't ever buy a car from someone in a hotel room , he was long gone to the next hotel

I am 54 years old have learned how to detail cars from color sanding down to taking the seats out to vacuum them correctly for dealers and wholesalers when advertising a car never advertise what you don't know because advertising it wrong could cost people their lives and I agree totally with the painting of the fender Wells every dealership or wholesaler always wanted the fender wells and any exposed frame or bottom lips blacked out but some of the stuff I came across while buffing or taking the carpet out was unbelievable

Like so many other things lately prices are just out of sight. I get it cost money to get good work done. But a gallon of paint costing hundreds of dollars is going to drive a lot of people away from classic cars. I am 63 and retired, would love to get a 60s car like the 69 Firebird I had just out of high school. But I’m not going to spend 100,000 dollars to relive some memories and maybe get some painted up pile of junk for my troubles. Would still buy a car that’s far from perfect if the seller was just honest about the car

@19:00 I agree with your comment about black paint. I like Uncle Tony, but I disagree with his comment about that. I'm restoring a 1966 Barracuda that has black paint in the left front wheel well. I jabbed at almost every square inch of that area with a screwdriver and found it to be rock solid as well as the rest of the car is. And I'm a firm believer SAFETY FIRST!!! That should be the #1 priority in buying any kind of vehicle.

I agree with you on 95% of what you said on this video.... But you know the old adage every one wants a Cadillac job for a VW price... Yeah even the VW price has gone up in today's world when it's done to the 9s... Point is know what your buying and pay accordingly to what your getting... I mean people are selling rolling shells for 10k...the paper work and the vins need to be right on and checked. I'm not an uncle caveman fan but I do enjoy watching bad Chad...and your channel. Saving the VW cherry picker was awesome!

My little bug is my mental health, stress reliever! I’m going to enjoy my little car! It’s not a show car but it’s also not bad looking. It has character & a few little issues but don’t we all 😅. California is a love hate relationship! I love it here but I can’t stand the people “running” things around here. I enjoy your videos & it’s like a refresher course for me.

Mike, you are one the best online mechanics out there. I just have to say one thing about paint and undercoating pertaining to VW and some older cars. I hope to be a classic VW Owner again, but I know through my past ownership is that in its construction history, VW bodies, fenders and panels are dunked into their primer, paint and clear coat tanks and allowed to dry as they are carried about. The Floor Pans and connected suspensions are painted black or grey (depending on year and where the VW was built). Thus the inside wheel wells would be the color of the rest of the body. Oddly, I remember my two 73's having a cardboard like material covering the inside of the front fenders, which is gone on 99.995% of today's VWs. That material was in black. Around '75. the automotive industry in the USA started to undercoat all vehicles with some rust proofing material (Rusty Jones, if you remember); I believe VW was doing this as well. Would that make the wheel wells turn black? I do not know. All I know is that my wheel wheels on my two '73 bugs back then were orange to match the rest of the car and it was before this program was started. I believe that some people are looking for this - the color of the wheel wells matching the rest of the car for that reason. Now, if I were to go buy a bug and inspect it, it better have some undercoating on it. If one took their time to restore it to as new a possible, it beter have some anti-rust protection. Hell, if somebody sprayed the bottom with a thin layer of truck bed liner, I know that it would protect the underside very well though what it is hiding remains to be seen. Keep up the good work and the great videos.

Thank you. I am tired of peoples unrealistic expectations. It's getting hard to sell a decent unrestored car without people nitpicking it to death. They expect a flawless car, and the car was not listed or priced that way. It's as if they have no idea what to expect from a 50 year old car.

There are a lot of people that do repairs very differently. Is JB weld better than actual welding ? No, but does it keep water from coming back up through the floor and make it driveable, absolutely. Most people aren't looking for a full restoration or show car. Just a good solid driver. Truth be told, most bugs that people are starting with are way worse than they used to be, primarily because they are older and getting harder to find without a lot of rust and repairs. Taking a rust bucket back to new really isn't feasible.
