Yay, so glad you chose this one to react to. I'm a big fan of Liz Shaw - she's a Cambridge scientist/doctor and can hold her own against the Doctor. Also, now you've seen a total of *3* Doctors stealing their costumes/outfits from hospital locker rooms... the 3rd Doctor, the 8th Doctor, and the 11th Doctor!

The third doctor, being around in the 70s, reflected popular things of the time.. hence he's a dashing james bond figure that fights a lot with martial arts (venusian aikido or karate) as a nod to the bruce lee / martial art craze at the time

Liz was actually briefly mentioned in The Death of The Doctor episode from Series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures so maybe you were probably thinking of that. When Sarah Jane and Rani asked the rogue UNIT colonel solider who was coming to The Doctor’s “funeral”, she responded by saying “The Briagdier is stranded in Peru and Liz Shaw can’t make it back from Moonbase until Sunday” as a way of justifying Liz and the Brig not being able to attend the funeral service. Nice to see you react to the 3rd Doctor’s first episode. I really dig this era of Classic Who. It’s nice to see the autons debut as well as a young Brigadier and Liz interacting with The Doctor.

Honestly, I think jumping around the Classic Who era is the way to go! There’s a lot of great stories, but the sheer volume of episodes can be overwhelming, and makes it difficult to get to the real gems. Also agree that the 4-episode stories are the best; when they get longer than that, they tend to drag in my mind. Some recommendations: The Moonbase (Second Doctor; 4 parts - one of my all time favorites) The Web of Fear (Second Doctor; 4 parts - first time we meet the Brigadier!) Day of the Daleks (Third Doctor; 4 parts - a very fun, if sometimes silly, timey-wimey Dalek story) The Three Doctors (Third Doctor; 4 parts - the first (kinda) anniversary special; essential) The Ark in Space (Fourth Doctor; 4 parts - iconic episode from Tom Baker’s first season) The Robots of Death (Fourth Doctor; 4 parts - lowkey I think this is the best Fourth Doctor story)

Oh, nice! This is one of my favourite Classic Who stories, in part because I watched it many times when I was younger, so big nostalgia factor for me, but also because it's just a great story. And the Third Doctor is probably my second favourite from Classic Who (after Tom Baker's Fourth). I think it would be great to have another story where the autons replace some important figures, maybe infiltrating government or something. It could make for a good suspense story if it was done so the audience has to guess who's an auton.

This was an excellent choice to watch! Pertwee is one of my favourite, and this story had so many firsts: first with the Doctor in exile on Earth, the first filmed in colour, the first filmed all on 16mm film rather than videotape (because of asbestos being found in studio so this was technically all filmed on location if I recall). And season 7 is, IMHO, the only flawless season in all of the Whoniverse. Although some of the adventures are a little long, they're all great stories without a single stinker.

No, asbestos in the studio wasn't why this story was largely shot on film. Very few people were worried about asbestos in 1969. There was a strike at the BBC that affected studio production. Asbestos in the studio did affect production of Season 25's "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy" in 1988.

This was one of my first classic episodes! Very glad you enjoyed it. I’m not sure if anyone else has pointed it out yet, but due to strikes of some description, this episode is the only one in the show’s history to be shot entirely on film, meaning it’s the only one that can be upscaled to true HD. It was also the first episode in colour, which is why the intro is so colourful. I agree with you that the autons look bloody creepy, and I think they’re at their scariest in the episode. Regarding what classic who episodes to react to next, I love the idea of jumping throughout eras. I think it’d be a good idea to watch stories from the 4 doctors you haven’t seen yet (2, 5, 6 and 7) so that you get an idea of what kind of doctor each of them is, but honestly you can do whatever you want. Day of the Doctor next, I’m very excited to see what you think of it!

I like Liz Shaw too such an underrated companion and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart it's debatable in fandom whether he counts as a companion or not. This takes place just after The Second Doctor was forced to regenerate for stealing a TARDIS, interfering in the affairs of other planets and time. This is also the very first episode filmed and broadcast in colour. I love 1960's black and white Dr. Who as well but 1970's Dr. Who was the golden era of the show.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see you react to this. The 3rd Doctor is my favourite Classic Doctor, and I often think of him like the James Bond of Doctor Who; he loves his gadgets (later on owning his own car named Bessie) and is very suave and charismatic. I'd never really heard the comparison made between 3 & 11, but that's certainly an interesting take! 11 often is compared to the 2nd Doctor. Which makes sense because Matt Smith based his Doctor off the 2nd Doctor. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing more Classic Who reactions! How did you find it with it being slower-paced? My worry for New-Who watchers is that they may find these older episodes "boring", given their slower pace.
@HamzaReactz
11 ай бұрын
Oh I wasn’t comparing him to Matt Smiths doctor, I just thought they both sound the same that’s all 😂 regarding the pacing. I think 4 parts is good enough. Anything over it just drags or has scenes that are a waste of time. But I can’t say much since I haven’t seen much of classic who :)

You may be recalling 'Lis' regarding Elisabeth Sladen? As to whether Elizabeth 'Liz' Shaw becomes a regular. Well, Who knows?" Jon was educated at Frensham Heights School, an independent school in Rowledge, near Farnham in Surrey, at Sherborne School in Dorset, and at some other schools from which he was expelled. After school, he applied to the Central School of Speech & Drama, but was denied admittance because of his lisp - being told that he will never work because of it! He was admitted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1939. He was accused of writing amusing graffiti about the tutors on lavatory walls. Whenever Jon made public appearances as The Doctor, the crowds would part to allow him through. However, when he made appearances as Worzel the scarecrow, he was mobbed! Appearance maketh the man? There are echoes of Jon's costume in the clothing chosen by the Twelfth Doctor. Jon's son, Sean, appeared in 1981 in an uncredited role in the TV series Worzel Gummidge, starring Jon as Worzel, the eponymous scarecrow. He plays one of the Crowman's scarecrows that is going to dig Worzel into a compost heap. Years later, Sean was a regular in Cadfael - the medieval monk detective series starring Derek Jacobi - as Sheriff Hugh Beringar. I remember this still of him smiling broadly at the end of an episode and I turned to my mother and said, "Look at that! Just like his dad!" If you are indeed jumping about, a nice pairing with this story would be the first story of season eight!

Just prior to this the timelords forced a regeneration and removed part of his memory on how to pilot the tardis. Stuck on Earth is basically his prison sentence. For what, you’ll have to watch more classic 🙂. I’m glad you are watching this one. Now that I’m seeing you watch this, I realize it was the best choice at this time. The Brig, autons, regeneration confusion…it’s all there. It’s cool to see how the doctor is always the doctor (even with some differences, but still the same). Jumping to different episodes is fine! I hope you like Day of the Doctor. Comments may have increased your expections past what it is. It’s very much an anniversary show, written in a way kids can appreciate.

Although the word wasn't used in those days, this was a soft reboot. When Patrick Troughton (the Second Doctor) decided to leave, the two actors playing his companions also decided to leave, so the BBC had a good opportunity to change things up. The Troughton era also had low ratings, and I think it was felt that people were becoming less interested in "outlandish" science fiction (alien worlds, etc) perhaps because of the real-life race to the Moon by the USA and the Soviets. That's why it was decided to have the new Doctor exiled to Earth by the Time Lords. This was also when the show switched from black and white. So there are on-screen and off-screen parallels with the start of Series 5 when we had new actors and a new production team as well. This story is unusual as it was entirely made on film. The number of episodes fluctuated a lot during the classic era. Most stories are four or six episodes but there are shorter and longer stories; four episodes only became the usual length from the Fourth Doctor's second year onwards (and even then there were frequent exceptions). Personally I think you'd be best trying out different stories from different eras, and then maybe exploring more in depth if you find you prefer a particular Doctor or companion (or writer). You'll definitely get requests to watch everything in chronological order from the beginning, but that's not how most people first experienced the show and you've already seen some of it "out of order" so why not carrying on just following suggestions? Just my two cents. 😀 Glad you enjoyed this one, anyway. I have mixed opinions about the Pertwee era but this is a strong introduction and is also fun by itself. 😀
