This is one of the best Historical stories and a great showcase for one of the best ever Dr Who companions Barbara. She and Ian are so good together and play such an important role in the early stories. I started watching Dr Who in 1967 when I was four. I recall there being plenty of Dalek toys. I had one that moved and spoke. Also a hand puppet Dalek. There was a plastic blue Dalek at nursery school. I cried so much on my last day because I was leaving it that they gave it to me and I still have it. There were Dr Who annuals as well. They are still going today as far as I am aware. I do so enjoy watching people work their way through classic who and get to the end having throughly enjoyed the journey.

I grew up with the 1970s & 80s eras of the show, but when the Hartnell episodes started to be released in the 1990s, I was pleasantly surprised how well the stories stand up, script and production wise, considering budget and production schedule. Like any series, not every story can be top-tier, but The Aztecs is certainly right up there, in my humble opinion.

I must admit a shout out to the very first Doctor Who episode was not on my bingo card for the latest iteration of the show which is aimed very much at a newer younger audience. The educational mandate may have largely disappeared fairly early on but the show will still touch upon it in the revival era, especially with the historical stories.

Ah now you're getting into it! Flirty Hartnell, and the first real 'messing with history is a no-no' story. some great drama and interplay here. Barbara is really good in this.

When I watched through the Hartnell era, my impression was that earlier on it might be any of the regular cast or guest actors who fluffed lines, but in the later part of his era it seemed like it was mostly a Hartnell thing. That said, the writers did lean into it as a character thing, and some supposed flubs were actually scripted.

Oh cool, 4 parts seems to be a sweet spot and cuts down on that lag that seems to happen around ep 5

Thanks for the project. I’ve seen this story many times (still one of my favourites) and I’m glad you enjoyed it. I find, too, that you give a fresh perspective on things, and it just helps me to look again at stuff I’m very familiar with. Lovely backcloths in that episode, too!
