The dialogue between Robertson and the Alien about God and Infinity being all the same was thought provoking. Classic episode.

My favorite episode hands down, no doubt due to the great acting talents of Cliff Robertson. I especially enjoyed how they created the special effect of the alien. Old-fashioned technology but extremely effective. It still holds up today.

I’ve watched this episode time and again and I’m always awestruck by Cliff Robertson’s portrayal of a simple man with an insatiable curiosity in how science is the gateway to unlocking the mysteries of the Universe. My favorite line is “Isaac Newton was a nobody…Michael Faraday was a bookbinder’s apprentice. But the secrets of the Universe don’t mind…they reveal themselves to those who care”. (This is from memory and may not be an exact quote). At any rate, lines of dialogue like this is what set “The Outer Limits” apart from the many mundane series that followed in its wake. And it’s true about Faraday…before he pioneered our understanding of electromagnetism and electrolysis he worked as a lowly apprentice involved in the binding of books.

It terrified me as well. It was way before my time but reruns are new to a kid. The Black and white filming added to the scary nature of it.

ME, TOO! This was one of the first things I watched on TV as a very young kid! I was born in early November, late 1960. I watched this show on our ABC station out of Cincinnati, just right across the Ohio River from us (just 4 or 5 miles away). My Dad was a TV repairman, so we always had the newest, high-end televisions that came out at that time. (We were also, the very first house on our cul-du-sac to have Color television in the mid-60's, so our neighbors would stop by often to watch anything in color). The Outer Limits was always in black and white, but that didn't matter. This show scared the living crap out of me as a very young kid, and that was all that mattered! It scared me senseless. I recall watching the film, "In Cold Blood" in 1967, at 6 years old, and I was caught in a loop of horror that OUR house was targeted for a home invasion! Television meant EVERYTHING to me when I was growing up! I watched EVERY SINGLE SPACE SHOT, ALL of the Moonwalks and every "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie" shows on real Eastern Standard time! I often wish that I could re-live it.....

Turn all the lights out. Kids gathered. Our big black and white TV's ready. Someone good at controlling the horizontal role at ready. Here we go. Best music of all sci-fi shows. Intelligent writing. There were a few clunker episodes, but the good ones were unforgettable. My favorite was O.B.I.T.

I saw this episode around May of '64, when I was 3 years old. I remember it quite vividly. It didn't scare me, I was fascinated by the glow and the unnaturally moving dark spots. It was interesting, years later, to find out how that effect was done.

MAN oh man!! I was 7 years old when I first saw this Outer Limit Classic!! I covered my eyes, most of the time, and I did not see the full episode until years later! By the time I was 7, I wanted to be an Astronaut or an Astronomer! These types of TV shows, and later, Star Trek, got me interested in Science and Biology and Chemistry, 2 subjects I would later Major in while finishing my 4 year College Degree! That later allowed me to enter Bio Tech and Bio Pharma and the rest is history!!

Thanks you for the fine discussion on this seminal episode of the show that had such an effect on my generation when we were lads watching from behind our moms on the sofa. I've got family in Brisbane (some of the family went to Australia and some to America during the wave of immigration in the early Twentieth Century. I would love to visit your lovely country some day, and I appreciate your astute observations on this show and the times in which it was made.

Had a friend in high school who was quite good tinkering with electronics . We built a microwave scanner/3D laser display setup inspired by this show and actually got some kind of signals that seemed to show some kind of ?? that was trying to communicate but never had enough power (and $$) to fully make contact. Last I heard he went on to work for the Defense Dept.

I was 4. This is the one I remember because it scared the crap out of me once the alien got out. Now I own both seasons. This one and the Zanti Misfits in Season 1 and The Premonition in Season 2 are my favorites. Star Trek TOS got three star characters (Kirk [Bill Shatner], Spock [Leonard Nimoy] and Scotty [James Dohann(sp)]) from this series as well as a few other characters. They also took ideas from Outer Limits and put them into The Enterprise and it's journey. The Premonition comes to mind as an idea in creating The Wink of an Eye from TOS and The Blink of an Eye in Star Trek's Voyager series.

What a wonderful video, touche my friend, touche. And for those below who were frightened by the series, I also join you. What might have been if they had only continued, nice thought there. Yes, looking now we can all have a nice chuckle at some of the effects, but what always shone through ( for myself at least ) was the writing and the great acting, who can forget Robert Duvall discovering his humanity after becoming an alien, yes? Thanks for posting this Jonny Baak... and the background information about the show and studio effects... good stuff. The Outer Limits was a truly a ground breaking show in the sci fi genre. I loved the intro narration, and the closing music by Domenic Frontierre with the picture of the what appears to be the milky way galaxy/stars in the background. There was always a introductory plot/storyline, and always finished with the narrator giving a 30 second sermon/message about pearls of wisdom to be gained from learning something about human nature and understanding our world and the universe better. The original Outer Limits show of the early sixties was always a favorite sci fi television show for me, along with the Twilight Zone... Rod Serling was a genius... My favorite episodes are the "Inheritors", (the only double episode in the entire series), I Robot, The Galaxy Being, Fun and Games, and the one starring Simon Oakland as the lead alien in a space ship in an amusement park... Health, Joy, Peace and Blessings to all!

Good job, Jonathan, but just one minor correction: Joe Stefano didn't have anything to do with the production of "The Galaxy Being." Leslie Stevens wrote, directed and produced it. In fact, when he showed it to the network, the executives congratulated Stefano for making such a good episode, Steven's didn't correct them, though, because he was more interested in getting their approval so the series could go into production. But "The Galaxy Being" was definitely Leslie Steven's baby.

Back when DVDs were new and everything was coming out on them I was addicted to get all the new stuff. Truly addicted. I have more DVDs than I can ever watch and in that mix is the complete series of The Outer Limits. My grandma loved the show and I watched it at her house when I was tiny. I purchased the show not so much from memories of it but because of the constant comparison to (one of my favourite shows of all time) The Twilight Zone, which I also bought the whole series on DVD. Well, Outer Limits is no Twilight Zone at all. In fact Tales From The Crypt (yes, you guessed it, I bought that one too), was far closer to the Twilight Zone. There were barely any episodes of The Outer Limits that I enjoyed and the effects compared to Star Trek and Twilight Zone were so awful. The Harlin Ellison episode that inspired Terminator was really good, and a few others, but none really stuck with me except the one I watched with my grandma, The Sixth Finger. The big surprise, besides not liking it so much, was the never ever mentioned episodes with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. How does that not get mentioned? Everyone talks about how they were both in Twilight Zone, but never ever mention their roles in Outer Limits. Oh well. I liked the show, but not nearly as much as I hoped. Luckily, Tales From the Crypt turned out to be a gory version of Twilight Zone, so in the end I still got what I was looking for. I really am enjoying this channel, but oy binge watching it is killing my work schedule!
