I can't say I really like it. I know it's a losing argument, But I would object to one of the greatest albums of all time. One of the most Influential albums of all time, I can work with. The major downfall is good vibrations, one of the greatest tracks of all time I am confident in saying, was not on it. There's just a bit too much throw away stuff on there to be greatest in my opinion

Brian Wilson was the primary songwriter for The Beach Boys. He suffered a nervous breakdown during the 1964 US Tour (he was replaced temporarily by Glen Campbell while he recovered, but Brian Wilson remained a member of the group in the recording studio, and would no longer perform on tour). Wilson felt enormous pressure to try to compete musically with The Beatles, to fight back against their relentless domination of the US music charts during the 1960s. In 1966, The Beach Boys released their album, "Pet Sounds", that most music critics regard as their best album. The Beatles responded with "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in 1967. Brian Wilson's mental health and drug addiction issues continued to plague him for many years, and he was fired from the group in 1982.

This is from Wikipedia, about the song "God Only Knows." The session musicians referred to here were known as "The Wrecking Crew," an insanely talented group of musicians who played on hundreds of hit records in the 1960s and '70s. "Wilson produced the record between March and April 1966, enlisting about 20 session musicians who variously played drums, sleigh bells, plastic orange juice cups, clarinets, flutes, strings, French horn, accordion, guitars, upright bass, harpsichord, and a tack piano with its strings taped. His brother Carl Wilson sang lead, a vocal performance that became regarded as Carl's best ever, with Brian himself and Bruce Johnston providing additional harmonies. The song ends with a series of repeating vocal rounds, another device that was uncommon for popular music of the era."

The face of popular music was changing rapidly by the mid 1960s - The Beach Boys and The Beatles were developing a 'friendly' competition with Lennon & McCartney and Brian Wilson abandoning the lighthearted style of pop music to a more sophisticated and serious style of music. Stereophonic sound was now the thing and sounds were becoming part of the recording process (important note: Brian Wilson, having lost much of his hearing in his left ear, began producing The Beach Boys in 1964 and even though he was inspired by the great Phil Spector and his 'Wall of Sound' style of recording, produced the band in Monophonic Sound - - - Wilson was not able to hear true stereo so he did not produce The Beach Boys in stereo sound - Capitol Records' technicians would manufacture many of their records in a technique they called Duophonic, a kind of fake stereo) - Blown away by The Beatles' lp "Rubber Soul", Brian Wilson was intent on topping that by putting together an lp, a total departure from the surfing, cars, girls and the fun-in-the-sun songs they'd been known for and accustomed to! Brian left the road in 1965 as a result of a nervous breakdown on route to Houston, TX and was replaced by one Glenn Campbell for about 6 months, then after leaving the band to pursue what would be a legendary country music career, Bruce Johnston came on board and has remained an integral part of The Beach Boys even to this day. While the band was on tour in Japan, Wilson (with help from an advertising executive named Tony Asher, wrote some of the most beautiful and melancholy but uplifting songs of his career and he contracted the famous and brilliant L.A. session musicians called 'The Wrecking Crew'! Together, Brian (who was in complete and total control of this entire recording process) penned the massive #1 hit "Good Vibrations" and laid down the instrumental tracks with 'dummy' vocals for what would be their music masterpiece, "Pet Sounds". When the Beach Boys got back home from the road, they hit the studio, listened to the amazing tracks by Brian, and basically just did their vocals with Brian's genius arrangements (brother Carl Wilson did contribute some guitar playing but the instruments were primarily done by the Wrecking Crew) not to mention spectacular integrations of sounds and sound effects such as bicycle bells, the theremin, pop cans, whistles, barking dogs, also various instruments not usually heard in pop/rock music, such as French horn, flutes, bassoon, the plucking of piano strings with a microphone inside the piano for deep resonance and slight echo. Brian Wilson created what, even to this day, is universally considered as one of the top 3 BEST albums ever in pop/rock music! Paul McCartney, who with John Lennon, listened to "God Only Knows", which led off side 2 of the original lp, and were so amazed by that song and the album,, they went into the studio at Abbey Road in England, and recorded THEIR OWN masterpiece, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in early 1967 and released on June 1st, 1967! McCartney was quoted as saying "God Only Knows" is the most beautiful song he's ever heard - quite a praise coming from him!

"Surfin' USA".... no "in the"....but you'll get it. 😉 This is from the HIGHLY acclaimed album "Pet Sounds"........which Paul McCartney called the greatest album he's ever heard....or something to that affect. It's a very melancholy love song which is a detour from the previous fun-loving tunes...the entire album is "different"...and shows off the genius musical abilities of Brian Wilson! "Sloop John B" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" are two more songs from Pet Sounds that you might like. "In My Room" is another very sweet and personal kind of song with the usual great harmonies but from a different album....."Be True To Your School" is a fun ditty about those who take pride in their high school......so many more BB songs; I Get Around, Don't Worry Baby, Help Me Rhonda, Surfer Girl, California Girls...then there's songs about cars: Shut Down, 409, Little Deuce Coup....their catalog is pretty big! And if you want to go way back....the first song they ever released...1961..."Surfin'".

It's a beautiful song and Pet Sounds a masterpiece, However the lyric is actually quite dark and brooding the song is about obsession in love. It captures a youth's view of love being overtly possessive. It describe how deep his love for her is and that he doesn't know what he would do should she ever decide to leave him. He then goes on to describe how if she left him his life would not be worth living.
