Today, we present the forgotten classic French 75 and its modern twist by our bartender Týna, called 'Last but not least.' In our video, you'll learn about the history of this famous cocktail and how to prepare both the original recipe and Týna's innovative version.
French 75: The Classic Cocktail
The French 75 is a classic cocktail that originated during World War I and was named after the French 75mm field gun. This refreshing and elegant drink was first introduced in 1922 in "Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails" by Harry MacElhone, the famous bartender of Harry's New York Bar in Paris. The cocktail became a symbol of interwar elegance, and its unique combination of gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and champagne won the hearts of many cocktail enthusiasts.

Last but not least: A Modern Twist
Our Týna was inspired by the strength and elegance of the French 75 and decided to create a version that reflects her personal tastes and favorite aromas.
Týna said about her twist: "I created this drink when I came across the Last but not least! cocktail on the internet. What struck me was that it is a twist on the French 75 itself. This interwar drink was first served in Paris at a New York bar, where bartender Harry MacElhone mixed it. Its name refers to a combination that had such a punch that one felt as if it had been fired from a powerful French 75mm field gun. I really enjoy using sparkling wine in drinks for that strength and slight bitterness. But what really caught my attention is the inclusion of sparkling tea. I started thinking that I would like to do this twist on the French 75 with nettle tea, as it is my favorite. I ended up using it as a cordial and thought of creating this drink from personal tastes and scents that I like. Since I love the scent and decoration of roses, I used rose syrup to sweeten the drink and as a decoration. The drink is short and strong again. But in terms of taste, it is more floral, and thanks to the combination of nettle and rose, it has both the earthiness of herbs and the lightness of flowers."
Ingredients:
- 40 ml Gin Tanqueray No. Ten
- 20 ml rose syrup
- 20 ml fresh lemon juice
- 20 ml nettle cordial
- Top up with sparkling wine
Instructions:
1. In a shaker, combine gin, rose syrup, fresh lemon juice, and nettle cordial.
2. Fill the shaker with ice and shake well.
3. Strain the mixture into a chilled coupe glass.
4. Top up with sparkling wine.
5. Garnish with a lemon twist.
