Sometimes so that people feel like they are buying something that's worth the money they are paying. Often all of the electronics would only take half of the enclosure (e.g. on original NES), and one would find an additional metal piece added just for weight. As for AC adaptors, well they really couldnt be made any smaller until end of 80ies.

Ahh, but the downside was that if you wanted to play games with great graphics and game play you had to have a lot of money & time for the arcades. The home consoles were in fact expensive when new. Just like today. However, unlike today you had no way of knowing if a game was good unless you had a friend who had the game, or played a demo at the store. Graphics were important, but you had to just settle for sub-par.
@3yE

There is substancial difference. Old consoles typically had a 10W PSU, this now fits onto half a credit card. HD consoles you mention have something like 400W or more PSU. The difference is that PSUs of 80ies worked on the frequency of the AC outlet, the ones starting from 1990 are based on high-power high-frequency semiconductors, to remodulate the AC. At high frequencies, transformers get much smaller and more efficient.
@3yE
15 жыл бұрын
Powering all from one PSU would possibly excede the power rating of one supplied. Using standard wallwarts also means that the actual device is inherently electrically safe and might not need specific certification, that's why internal PSUs might not have been considered. This input device probably needs ridiculously little power for itself.

How Cool! I didn't know the Colecovision Roller Controller Plugged into the power adapter like that. You know that means business when the CONTROLLER is powered off of that huge power supply. As for size of systems... You need to get an Atari 5200... That system says "Don't screw with me"...
