I am in a position to dedicate quality time with my family and friends and look after my children and also going on holiday break along with them very frequently. So today my wife and I visited a local Jamaican restaurant. Actually it was the only one in our area. I tried the oxtail stew while my wife had some curried shrimp. Obviously we both had beans and rice. Both servings came with a cabbage side that had a unique taste. Not quite savory but not sweet too. It had an interesting buttery semi sweet flavor that worked well to compliment the spiciness of the meats we were eating. This side dish didn't seem to have been steamed too . Regardless we are looking to make that at home . Is what I am describing a one off recipe or is this an alternative to cabbage dishes served in Jamaica ?

The title still seems confusing... stir *frying* uses oil... steaming uses steam from the veggies or added water! I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just can't use added fats and oils for health reasons, so don't buy it. Could I just saute in some broth initially?

This looks good! I’m going to try, quick question I’ve had Jamaican steamed cabbage and it had an Italian dressing flavor, do you have a recipe for that?
@naturegirl2110
4 жыл бұрын
Straight from a Jamaican. Here's a more simplified way. Chop up cabbage, put it in the pan. Shred carrot on top. Chop up one onion, a few stalks scallion. Add a few sprigs thyme. Add salt and black pepper to taste. Pour 1-2 tablespoons oil. Then turn on you stove set to medium heat. Doesn't matter if lid is on or off. The second you hear sizzling lower the heat and stir. Cover the pot. Stir every 15-30 minutes until done. You can add scotch bonnet (habenera) pepper if you choose just put it in the other ingredients before turning on the stove. Use sparingly, very spicy.
