Paul Benedict (September 17, 1938 - December 1, 2008) was an American actor who made numerous appearances in television and movies beginning in 1965. He was known for his roles as The Number Painter on the popular PBS children's show Sesame Street, and as the English neighbor Harry Bentley on the CBS sitcom The Jeffersons.

It was GREAT to see ALL TEN "Mad Painter"films again, for old times' sake!!! My favorite was the 11 film--HILARIOUS, when Mad Painter(Benedict, of course)moves his head around in a circular motion, as Mac erases the 11! Also, the end of the 10 film always killed me, when we see Benedict's 10 on Mac's RUMP, just before the end. The 8 film is A TRIP, right before the end, as Mac(or whoever that bald man is)discovers the 8 was painted on his BALD head. They are ALL worthwhile seeing. Thanks!!!

I once asked him about the sheet music, but he was sort of embarrassed to say that he didn't know where it was; that he was improvising a little, using time sheets. He used a tack piano that had been salvaged from the old Roxy theater. If you like Sesame Street, he also wrote the "milk milk milk" song that everyone seems to remember. He was every bit as amiable and intelligent as the music you seem to appreciate.

I remember all of these and was surprised that they didn’t have one for the number 12. I used my imagination by picturing the Mad Painter going on stage and yelling to the audience “I’m going to paint a 12!” and the audience booing him because they know who he is and are tired of this guy painting numbers in random places! No such segment existed, I’m only using my imagination.

The closest we get to that is with number 10 when the ritual is disrupted, and the Mad Painter looks on in horror to find that his number has mysteriously disappeared... But some mysteries are meant to endure. Why only 2 to 11? Maybe they ran out of time. But at least we have the 1-10 series that ends with the falling baker. That was the old days, of course; nowadays, kids have to learn more numbers. Their "40 Blocks From My Home" segment, for example.

Sesame Street did not feature the number 1 on the show until well into the 80's. They figured that 1 was a simple enough concept that they did not need to give it airtime. When he paints it, it isn't the size of the seat on the stool, but when he is showing the 10 to the camera, it is the size of the seat. Also notice that 3 and 6 are the only ones he doesn't use paint for. 6 is also the only one he doesn't use a paint brush for. Does anyone seem to care that this guy is defacing property? When he was paint 9 in the street, it is a wonder a cop didn't come by and arrest him. Of course if we know the painter, he probably would have painted the 9 on the cop car, which would have gotten him in even more trouble.
