One of my favorite tv series of all time! The intro musical theme by John Barry is a classic. It was very popular cult series in France where it was titled "Amicalement Vôtre" (Friendly Yours). For a while, it even had it's own comic book series in the anthology magazine Pif Gadget. In my province of Quebec, the french translation was also very popular and had regular reruns for many years. Older viewers of that era (like me) still remember the tv series very fondly.

The Series was called "Die 2" = "The Two" in Germany and was a big success in the 70s and 80s. One of the Reasons for the success was the special german Dubbing by Rainer Brandt. At the Time his Dubbing Studio became famous for inserting humorous lines into the dialog that wasn't in the original. It turned the Series more into a Comedy with Action Scenes. Allegedly Tony Curtis, who spoke a bit german, liked it so much that he wanted Rainer Brandt to write for the Series, but it never came to be.

Yes, and the French version had the German scripts as the basis for the French dubbing. And therfore the series was also a great hit in France. In Germany the series was so beloved that was on an nearly instant replay through the 70s til the 90s. On the German DVD set was an interview with Rainer Brandt and he told, that after season 1 the German broadcaster did send a few tapes with the German version of the show to Tony Curtis and he loved it. And when you switch on the German DVD between the German soundtrack and the English one you can see how much dialog was added. A lot of dialog from the off and generaly much more funny dialogs then in the original version. I ahve seen the series a lot of times during the re-runs on TV and later on on DVD. This was the first time in Germany that an original script was heavyly altered in the dubbing process. Rainer Brandt became very famous with his dubbing and founded his own dubbing studio. He later on would made all the German versions of the Terence Hill and Bud Spencer movies and had a big role in the success of those movies in Germany. It went so far, that during the shooting of one of the last films of the series Bud Spencer was a lot complaining about the very bad scripts and diaolgs they had to say and Terence Hill calmed him down with the remark, that he dont have to worry, because Rainer Brandt would be doing a good job in rewriting the script during the dubbing.

It was also very popular in Hungary, where very few Western series reached here at the time. The dubbing voices were also good (József Láng and István Sztankay). In Hungary, its title was: "Two spoons in every juice". Tony Curtis was of Hungarian origin. The title of "The Saint" in Hungary is "The Angel", perhaps "saint" was considered too clerical in socialism.

Wow, looks like im far from being the only one who loved this series that's for sure. Actually, along with the Saint, it's my favourite tv series of all time. It's style and vibe over substance (although style has more substance than substance sometimes) and the way Roger and Tony came across on screen was magic. The theme music-and the incidental music-is unforgettable and best in class, and the overall sense of style, glamour and freedom exuded a charm that still resonates to this day. That's why endless re-runs in which i shall always indulge, work like a tonic. I've even been known to park up outside Lord Brett Siclairs' residence in central London from time to time (the building used for the exterior shots) to 'catch the vibe'. Once in a lifetime never to be forgotten magic.
