Based on the movie of the same name, this 1963 series starred Inger Stevens in the title role: a young Swedish woman who takes a job as governess for children of a widowed Congressman (William Windom). By the end of season two the governess and the Congressman were engaged. The marriage occurred in season three, after which ratings dropped...too bad, as the show was still warm and funny. It has received little play in syndication, perhaps due to the sad real-life story of Inger Stevens. She earned a Golden Globe for her performance as Katy Holstrum.
For the black-and-white seasons the show used a theme by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Season three switched to color and a new theme by Dave Grusin. Incongruously for a show about a Swedish woman, it was a bossa nova! Yet it fit beautifully with the gorgeous color shots of Inger Stevens.
