I always think of poached egg when I hear this. The reason is that I finished school and walked home. When I got there, mum would give me a slice of hot buttered toast and a poached egg to keep me going until dinner. This tune would be playing before the programmes started. I was 5 years old at the time. Word association I suppose you could say.

Popularly known as the ATV march this was played immediately before programme transmission. At lunchtime before Lunchbox, presented by Noele Gordon and again at teatime before children's programmes. "ITA Lichfield" (later "ITA Midlands") testcard remained on screen as the music started. As the crescendo reached its climax the testcard faded and the double eye ATV logo came forwards, the eyes slid apart with ATV appearing in the spaces. Associated Television Ltd unrolled along bottom of screen.

Most people remember ATV as a midlands station, but between 1955 and 1968 it also provided the weekend programmes in the London area where this tune was also used.

Thank you very much for uploading this. The grand ending brought me to tears. Can't think how long it was when I heard this last.

There are times when I think Eric Coates may be my favourite composer.

A real gem from a genre of music that is now rather out of fashion: British Lght music.

Takes me back to 4.45pm all those years ago in Birmingham - this opener, then Tingha and Tucker with Auntie Jean Morton and sometimes Uncle Pat Astley. ATV always had the best ident, especially when colour TV arrived.

Another sad fact was that Eric Coates died in 1957 so he never heard his music played for very long in the ITV era.

What date or era was this theme played in? Some of your themes don't have dates of when they were in use.

Do you by any chance have the old ABC Television theme? Have not heard that in years and years. British Light Music at its best.

It was a test card which then cut to a filmed animation of the ATV logo. If it was timed correctly, the letters A, T, and V hit with the music (at around 2:10 here).

Is this a fairly new recording? It's not quite the same as the one on Pye Nixa records! I still have a 78rpm copy of this, with the Dambusters March on the reverse.. Great stuff!

As far as my research goes, I have seen 2 variants. I just discovered the one that uses this rendition of the music today.

What an awfully depressing piece of music, thank God its of a bygone era and we are no longer subjected to this noise!
