You could make a case for this being the best-looking alien planet in Doctor Who. Set designer Roger Murray-Leach did tons of great work for this era but the atmospheric jungle of Zeta Minor might be his crowning achievement. The actual story isn't high on my favourites list either but those dessicated corpses do make for some potent nightmare fuel. Good to have you back with us!

This set actually had photos taken for it and was frequently used in "how to build jungle sets" classes. That's how *good* of a set it was. Also: "Stand by for emergency materialisation!" - Four seems far too happy in that situation. And how settled into travelling with 4 is Sarah? *They're snarking, in unison with one another, while being interrogated!*

The Commander is played by Prentis Hancock, who often played hot headed characters. He played a similar type in Planet of the Daleks with Jon Pertwee. The other two main guest characters are played by Ewen Solon (Vishinsky) and Frederick Jaeger (Sorenson), they both appeared in the William Hartnell story The Savages as the leaders of the two opposing groups in that story. The BBC were so pleased with the highly detailed jungle set used in this story, they used photos of it in a training manual for years as an example of excellent set design.

A very underrated gem in the Tom Baker/Phillip Hinchcliffe/Robert Holmes Era. Very atmospheric and eerie and Tom Baker perfectly balances the comedy and the serious drama brilliantly.

Prentis Hancock, the guy playing Salamar the leader, has guest starred in a few classic Who stories, before this one! Most notably he played the hot-headed Thal, Vaber, in the third Doctor story, Planet of the Daleks in season 10. One of the other crew members, Morelli, was played by Michael Wisher, who had previously guest starred in the third Doctor’s opening story of season 8, Terror of the Autons, playing Rex Farrell. Wisher is perhaps more well known as the 1st actor to play Davros, in the classic story, Genesis of the Daleks!

In retrospect this is Dr Who's most reactionary period. This story's visuals borrow from 1950's cult sci-fi classic 'The Forbidden Planet' (itself a variation on Shakespeare) and also on the old Jekyll and Hyde trope. That's enough to keep the population of the time interested.

This story is pretty much forbidden planet but really I love the horror elements especially the jungle design, this actually had a really great sequel called Zeta Minor in the Dr who lost adventures books.

Tremendous story! Dr Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde meets Forbidden Planet. As others have said, the jungle set is superb and it's another creepy and unsettling serial from what many consider to be the greatest era of Classic Who. Most of the cast have been in Who before and they work splendidly together with the regular cast. Sarah has plenty to do and quite rightly has a decent amount of screen time. Thank you for another great reaction, Jess ☺👍

When I was a kid, I would always focus on Tom Baker in that last scene, and how you could make out his looking towards the crew off-screen as if to get stage direction. Go back to that scene as he first gets to the hole. You'll see his head is down but his eyes are looking towards the camera. LOL

Great classic story and concept an obvious inspiration for 42. This story's tie to the Antimatter Universe (possibly the same as Omega's dimension) makes me wonder if The Duffer Brothers where inspired by it to make the Upside Down. I really want Zeta Minor to return. Hopefully as the gateway Omega uses to escape the Antimatter universe. Would be spectacular

People signalling Prentis Hancock's participation in this may also acknowledge the BBc's keenness to bring Season 13 forward to cover 'Space 1999' in the schedules, lest it lost out in the UK. But this failed to occur. Somehow, just as today, charm and passion won out. And that - for those willing to investigate the Fanderson ouvre - is not a criticism. Everything has its place.

I hope you are feeling better. It's always struck me as odd that Tom Bakers first scene in the Tardis should be such a something of nothing moment. Seven stories into his run as the Doctor and the scene is, "oh well be better land then." While this isn't a brilliant story it is a nice analogy for the zeal with which people embraced Nuclear power over other options, such as hydro for example. Option 1 we have a power supply that produces a lot of power, but has very nasty byproducts and is extremely hazardous to use. Or option 2 we have a power supply that is constant but requires a lot of infrastructure to make. Humanity votes "Oh option 1 every time.
