Unfortunately, this song has nothing to do with this sort of child abuse. According to the singer, it is a pathetically generic American 'I hate the government and everything bad in my life is it's fault' song. I choose to ignore this disappointing revelation and just take it at face value. With most songs, when you find out the true meaning and re-listen, it makes the song a lot better. In this case, it cancels out so much of it's uniqueness.
@firefighterchick
5 ай бұрын
@SarthorS he didn't say that it was about any government but society as a whole. And not that it's an excuse for bad behavior. Mommy is our society (too many people in it)who demand that people conform to what is 'normal' and that anyone who isn't has the sickness. It's a rally against 'mommy' and fighting against the manipulative abusive behavior that society brings against those who don't conform.

This song needs to be preserved in the Library of Congress. To me, it is their best song, middle section included. When I listen to it, I really do feel that desire to be yourself and not conform for the sake of conforming. The second verse ("I can see inside you, the sickness is rising...") is like Draiman reaching out and inviting the listener to break free of the chains put on you by "Mommy." The whole album in general is full of these metaphors about individuality being represented through images of sickness, sex (consensual and not), beatings, murder, etc... The band name itself is a part of this as well. "Disturbed" is a reference to someone expressing their individuality and going against the grain being labeled "disturbed" in some way by society, or the mother culture. They're taking those negative labels of being sick and disturbed and reclaiming them. They have a song called "A Welcome Burden" written for this album but not officially released until their B-sides compilation album "The Lost Children," which describes the "rape of the mother culture," and peeling away her disguise to find the sickening truth (to which Draiman says "I kind of like it ugly"). If you didn't know any better, a simple face-value reading of the lyrics from this whole album is, if you can pardon the pun, disturbing. But it's clear there is a pure and potent desire for individuality that permeates this whole album.

@@SarthorS So you prefer to interpret it as a sick and twisted individual trying to recruit other people into being sick and twisted and then killing his own mother?? That's a bit weird to me. Not sure why you would WANT that to be the meaning...
@SarthorS
5 ай бұрын
@@cowsaysmoo51 No. The mother IS the government, and all the horrible things she does to the kid is what the American government does to the people of the US. According to the band itself, that's the real meaning of the song. Like I said, it's pathetic and ruins it. I prefer to take it at face value. That it's an horrible mother whose abuse makes her child into a violent murderer and perpetuates the cycle of violence. Much better than some stupid political thing where a loser blames all his failures and shortcomings on the government.
@cowsaysmoo51
5 ай бұрын
@@SarthorS Okay so ALL of that is wrong. Draiman himself said, and this is a DIRECT QUOTE from him, "I'm really talking about the conflict between the mother culture of society, who's beating down the child yearning for independence and individuality, and the submission of the child." Which is LITERALLY what my first comment is about. It is not about somebody blaming his failures on the government, it's about society at large demanding conformity and dismissing those who do not conform. It's not political at all. It sounds like you're just projecting your own political views into a song with zero political angle, and also like you're glorifying the cycle of abuse.
@SarthorS
5 ай бұрын
@@cowsaysmoo51 I didn't mean that HE was blaming his failures on society. I was talking about the type of American who typically spews garbage like this. And yes, it's entirely political. I am not American, and so this almost pathological hatred that some Americans have for the very concept of government stands out very sharply to anyone who didn't grow up in a place where this is a significant thing. The people of the US probably have the most independence and push individuality more than any other culture that has ever existed, and yet they also are likely the ones who whine the most about their lack of those things. At least when the punks of the 70's were screaming about the same nonsense, they were intelligent enough to realise that if they got their way, it would mean the almost total collapse of their country, their society and their culture. But they didn't care because they 'wanted to watch the world burn'.

I don't know if he'll react to Daddy, but it's in my opinion there best song. it's heavy, dark and experimental it and fits the lyrics/backstory very well. the acapella intro, the creepy riffs, the crying/singing near the end, the weird conversation on the extended cut, etc. Everything about it is such a pure raw work of art, from a deep emotional pit. I think the best Music paints a picture and builds a world with it's sound, and this does that amazingly.

I'm reminded of bands like Rage Against the Machine or Nirvana not being as willing to bend to power. The 3+3+2 meter in this song is called a "Tresillo." When done with 16th notes, it's the first half of a rhythmic phrase common to Cuban music called the "Son Clave," which is syncopated as 3+3+4+2+4. You also get the same pattern when you take the first half of a bossa-nova rhythm, which is fully phrased as 3+3+4+3+3. It's a bit harder to parse in this song because it's done in eighth notes instead of 16th notes, effectively making it a compound rhythm with two bars of 6/8 and one bar of 2/8, which as you mentioned simplifies to two bars of 4/4. I usually mentally count an eighth note tresillo as "1 and 2 and 3 and | 1 and 2 and 3 and | 1 and 2 and" compared to a 16th note tresillo which I count as "1 and a 2 and a 3 and | 1 and a 2 and a 3 and." Despite being based on a Cuban tempo, Tresillos and Son Claves can be found in lots of American rock music, and once you know what you're looking for, you'll find the rhythm everywhere.

ok hear me out on this one guys: do NOT watch the music video or a lyrics video, just put your attention to the music- infant annihilator - ‘blasphemian’ or ‘ov sacrament and sincest’ some extremely technical solos and crazy riffs, and there is a ton of musicality involved in them if you can get behind the name (and vocals) (btw, they are a parody band if you were a bit scared at the name. they make everything over the top on purpose)

My first ever comment on a KZitem video, love everything you do, and Down with the Sickness is so iconic. Really appreciate your take on this music and your insight.

Love Disturbed, and, loved your reaction! Not many reactors see the full version, so, yours was a treat. Please do more from Disturbed as they have a huge catalog of hits well worth getting to know. 😊

Although I was well aware of the metaphorical meaning of this track, I sent this version to my mother, as I suffered a great deal of mental and physical abuse from her as a child. It gave me a sense of closure.

Their cover of Land Of Confusion i feel is a spiritual successor to the main message of this. Also, you really need to hear Richard Cheese's cover of this song. 🤣

I love the retelling David Draiman gives about this song. the Uh-ah-ah-ah-ah wasn't really part of the written song but once he was in the booth and heard the drums and the guitar, it basically just came out of him

Disturbed - Voices. I think this is second after down with the sickness. More of their heavy stuff.

I love the song, personally, and pride myself on self-teaching the OH-AH-AH-AH-AH and can get enough power behind it to startle folks. I feel the song is... Kinda naked without that controversial bridge. I initially heard the album edit, so I'm jarred to not have the bridge in there; I didn't know the more metaphorical reasoning, but as an angry, broken, bullied little teen it let the anger I felt out into music. It and other numetal around the early 2000s helped me find an outlet for how much I was aching and breaking that wasn't someone other kid who tipped me off on the wrong day, or myself. Disturbed, Korn, Slipknot, they still keep me going and help find non-destructive outlets when the mental health spirals out of control to concerning places.

72 YR OLD GRANDMA OF 2 HERE❤️⚘️ Doug this is a sad song Chester took his life. I loved Lincoln Park , it was sad and hard back in the day. 60s 70s and 80s were my stomping grounds. There is an Artist I really think you'd enjoy. I really enjoyed your reaction and wanted to share. If you would like to check out "Dan Vasc" , is Beyond Epic. He is another singer who admired Linkin Park as a young singer himself starting out. If your a voice coach you would so enjoy Dan's 250 covers of many genres. Dan has had professional training ! He's metal / rock his Amazing Grace is Epic. He just dropped a metal version of " My Heart Will Go On" . Incredible ! From Disneys movie classics , Tarzan , Mulan (metal) ! Opera / Phantom of , Bocelli, Nessum Dorma, 70's 80's 90's A Million Dreams , Beauty and the Beast , Elvis's "American Trilogy cover " he did 5 days after his Father passed. That was about 7 yrs ago and was a very Heart Felt dedication to his Dad. He and his father used to sing Opera together when he was a young boy. His father gave him a harmonica at 7-8 yrs old and he still plays it today. He's humble, shows his emotion , feelings theatrics and animation is incredibly unique ways. He could be on Broadway ! ! Sooo much more. He started his channel at 18-20 yrs old back 07 - 08 he's 34 and his goal was to hit 1 million Subs. He almost there with well over 900 thousand. He has a montage of photo's from when he first started to Michael Boltons song "Go The Distance". From day 1 He has all his music on his channel for all to see. He loves for his followers to see and hear his improvements. JUMP IN the rabbit hole Dan has created Is ONE YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS !!! And won't regret it ❤️⚘️ I've subcribed and I'm anxious to follow . Thankyou Doug ❤⚘️
