Anneke Van Giersbergen is very highly regarded as one of the best female vocalists in metal, specially because at the time she joined The Gathering as their lead singer this wasn't very common at all and specially not in her style of singing.
@geuseliohulk8661

The Gathering is a band that started atmospheric doom and death metal with vocalist Marike Groot and Bart Smit as lead vocals (growls). At first, seeing things in historic perspective. Back in 1991/1992 the gothic metal we know now in 2007 (After forever, Nightwish, Epica etc) wasn’t around yet and The Gathering were truly a groundbreaking and trendsetting group. If they hadn’t played their part together with for instance Orphanage, the Dutch scene would probably have developed very differently. Still firmly based upon the 1991 Paradise Lost album ‘Gothic’ but incorporating keyboards in a more important way and writing some lengthy songs. There were death grunts and additional female vocals which these days have become quite mainstream but were refreshing back then. The Gathering were pioneers, just don't expect the style to be perfected yet on a pioneering debut album. In 1992 ‘Always’ received 100 points in many magazines. Having said that, the album in a way has lost a lot of impact over the years. This has two main reasons. First a scene in this subgenre emerged and later incidentally surpassed this album but secondly the band themselves made some changes later in their career and broke through the mainstream audience with their third album ‘Mandylion’ and vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen. Still, ‘Always’ is a beautiful and very important album if you are into the genre. With some lengthy songs, a lot of diversity and - in contrast to contemporary Gothic bands - the emphasis really on DOOM. Bart Smits has a monotone voice but suits the material well and Marike Groot (formerly Little Mary Big, Wonderlust) did a great job with the female vocals. Credit: Morbert On the second album, The Gathering adds progressive metal ballad, an acoustic ballad followed by progressive doom metal. Martine Van Loon was female vocalist and male vocalist Niels Duffhues in dark wave and aggressive goth rock style, not very characteristic of the genre. In the Mandylion album begins the fusion of elements aimed at a larger audience. Two strong points are the entry of Anneke and the direction to TRIP ROCK with reminiscence of PROGRESSIVE METAL.

The Gathering started as a doom metal band, but gradually evolved into an atmospheric/heavy rock band, which is the style where they found the most commercial success. Back in the 90s, Anneke was almost every metalhead's dream girlfriend 😁 I've always appreciated her style more than the typical operatic/classical female metal singers that followed the trail she blazed...

Wow! Didn't expect to see The Gathering on here! One of my all-time Top 25 bands. They had a remarkable evolution from their early death metal period, to their doom metal period when Anna Van Giersbergen joined (which this track is from), to their alternative/prog rock period, to their late shoegaze/dream-pop period. The amazing thing is that the albums they produced in every period are superb, and it's rare that a band that changes genres that radically excel that much in each genre. Anneke has the voice of an angel and is definitely one of the absolute best female vocalists in metal. She's also had a great solo career, and her collaborations with Devin Townsend and Danny Cavanagh (of Anathema) are superb too.

I’m a big fan of the Gathering (with Anneke van Giersbergen). So many great albums. Try the song Travel, studio version, a song about Mozart. Anneke inspired Floor Jansen and several other Dutch female singers to sing in a metal band. The Gathering was a hardcore metal band until Anneke came. Now it’s progressive metal. Anneke sings on many albums by Ayreon and in the two live concerts: Ayreon Universe live The electric castle live and other tales. She has her own band VUUR. Also see The Gentle Storm.

She has guested on several other favorite projects of mine: Giant Squid's 2009 album The Ichthyologist on the track Sevengill, Amorphis' 2018 album Queen of Time on the track Amongst Stars, and on the Silver Lake by Esa Holopainen (Amorphis' guitarist) album from this year. Anneke is one of Arjen Lucassen's friends. She appeared in the last show Arjen did in September 2023. She also shines in the live registration of the 2019 show 'Into the Electric Castle and other stories' where she sings the role of the (doomed) Egyptian contestant. This show had about 20 songs played live and the registration was of outstanding quality. Arjen himself, though he is no longer keen to be on stage all the time, still loves to play and sing the 'Hippie' contestant.

Awesome ... Thanks Doug! So glad you enjoyed this and your bit of research and the suggestion to use this performance is much appreciated. Those chord progressions are typical for many of their albums. You'll also find them in Always, Mandylion and others. Anneke is Devin Townsend's metal tinkerbell for good reason, and has been a shining example to many female lead singers. I warmly recommend you experience their track 'Travel' performed in that same concert. It honours a composer, and all composer if you interpret it broadly. And it showcases the more trip rocky / Floydy part of their oeuvre, and as a bonus you'll get Anneke in overdrive. An absolute must listen. Yes, this is no heavy metal. Even though they started as such and laid foundations with other bands for goth/symph metal, they would develop in different ways. Much similar to how Anneke was never the standard metal queen, the band wouldn't comply with any genre nor commercial standards. If you wish to experience Devin Townsend and Anneke at their live best: Pixillate by DTP, performed in the By a Thread concert. Enjoy!
