Transitions really are so important and I agree, verbal explanation truly isn’t enough. I make them do it until it meets my expectations! 😊

Yes! Transitions are so important and can eat up valuable class time if no protocol exists.

So glad addressed the importance of practice. It’s as important as the protocols themselves. Have a great school year!

I teach PE and have classes with 55 students at the middle school level. Two of my classes are pretty chaotic even though the protocols have been put into place. I will pause the lesson and go back to rehearsing the protocols but some students will just not care and want to waste time. I have spoken with their parents multiple times and there is still no change. What would you suggest?

There has to be consequences beyond calling home. Are they having "detention" with you during lunch? Can you ask permission to hold them after school for 10-15 min and discuss the importance of the rules. Maybe being held back those few minutes of inconvenience is enough to listen in class. Doesn’t not listening hurt their participation? In physed, unlike other classes, participation has to be included in the grade, no? Are there grade consequences? I’d think of consequences for their actions beyond calling home. There has to be consequences by you in school as well. I usually call home as a last resort bc that can make students lash out at you more. I like to do whatever I can first. Are they involved in clubs? Certain privilege should be removed temporarily. Not everyone will agree with this, but hope it gave you some ideas.

Thank you so much for all your teaching advice Amanda! I’m a first year middle school substitute teacher right now, it’s been tough and discouraging after working with some “difficult” students and having rough days in the classroom but watching your videos always remind me that teaching is an art and a caring (not controlling) approach towards the students is one to prioritize. I love your approach to teaching and all of your tips, thank you!🙏🏽

A soothing voice?! Thank you! That might be the first time I have ever received that compliment but I'll take it! Thank you for the support and I am so glad that the videos are helping other teachers that are not in my area of expertise!!
