Terrific interview Planta. I too am a documentary film maker and ride motorcycles since over 50 years. I rode through Afghanistan in 1977 when there was no war and no conflict. It was a terrific experience, warm, friendly people and great food

How amazing to hear from somebody who knew Afghanistan before the Russian invasion in 1979. Riding through Afghanistan on a motorbike in 1977 must have been a very inspiring experience. Do you have photos or films from that time? I would love to see some glimpses from that pre-war time. Thanks for your comments and best regards, Claudio
@Navroze

@@ClaudiovonPlanta_Documentaries No Claudio, I don't have any. Those were the days when taking your own pictures while traveling was NOT ON. I do have some images of people, Iran mostly, but that's it. I had a BSA GOLD STAR DB34 sports bike that I wanted to take to England and have Eddie Dowe do it up for me. I did the journey in 21 days flat. But, I hitch-hiked to Europe in 1969 when the entire region was in peace and a friendly mode...including Europe. I hadn't started filming then. All history now.

Having a strikingly similar background in TV production as Claudio, and first hand knowledge of the mental & physical reserves you need to draw on for productions of this sort. I very much appreciated this interview for its non-motorcycle content and to hear more about Claudio. From the first film, it was apparent that he was an equal member of a team that would become fast friends. Of course, once that happens, the impartiality is gone-and that was OK. I think it definitely added to each of the stories. I thoroughly enjoyed the non-motorcycle stuff perhaps more so than the various trips. Particularly, Ulan Bator story-it's definitely a place of great poverty. I became more aware of the situation through an organization I've supported that provides eye surgeries as both a mechanism to help the people but also to train physicians to perform these same surgeries. Thanks again for a very telling (and moving) story.

Whew, I'm glad to hear you say that. As I was editing and it was getting longer and longer, I didn't know what to do. Would people get upset about too much war journalism and not enough motorcycles? I almost split it into 2 interviews. Now I wish I'd kept a few things in that I threw overboard because length, like his near-death experience from the malaria that he got in New Guinea.
@ian408

It's like watching an iMax doc on a Mount Everest climb and how hard it is for the climbers and I keep thinking , "ya, but what about the people lugging those giant iMax cameras and gear with them". The one thing I can say is Ewan and Charlie seem to give Claudio the attention he deserved too and made him part of the story. They seemed very caring about him and his journey as well as their own.
