This little song started out as an 18th-century Scottish fiddle tune and a poem/song called "Soldier's Joy" by Robert Burns, writing about the horrors of the Siege of Gibraltar during the American Revolutionary War. Later, in the 19th century, American musicians changed up the lyrics to reflect the American Civil War and the concoction of morphine and alcohol called "Soldier's Joy" at the time (an ironic name for this pain reliever).
