Nice clean up job. When I was in the Navy we used "bug juice" to clean up brass. I remember a friend of mine in school showed me a drinking glass he etched a pattern into with acid. I recently read about how water in a cast iron sewer pipe can create acid and corrode the pipe quicker. I wonder if acid was created in the furnace cast iron pipes and ate away at the glass?

Ha, first time I've seen a grinder produce a musical note, neat! Cleaned up right nice!

I’ve used many types of sights glass for condensate level indicators or for observation of condensate flow. Several types of glass could be used for up to 40-50 lb. of pressure. But modern engineering standards suggested these be removed from equipment as they can fail. We repositioned many sight glass units so in the event of failure the observer would not have steam blasted directly at them. In other words we would back light the sight glass and observe the level from the side with a shield that deflects steam and glass away from a persons body. I’ve only had two failures in my whole work experience. That was caused by a condensate flash back in a twelve inch steam and condensate line having the condensate flash back into steam. I collect test equipment, sight glasses and anything related made of brass. I also collect river flow gauges used to measure total over all water flows in rivers. Such as cubic feet per second type readings. Any old test equipment I also collect. None of what I collect has any electronic components. There are are a few things I do collect with electronics but they have to be rare and odd for me to do so. I was just offered a job setting up a small testing lab and found a company who supplies reconditioned mechanical testing devices for that use. I’ll need about a dozen of these units and may purchase several more extras a spare parts. No hi tech is needed for this type of testing. All though we are going to purchase a spectrometer but that is another story. I could help myself last year as I purchased a very old Freeness tester for scrap price. It is solid brass and I bet you would be hard pressed to find anyone who could even figure out what the heck it is let alone figure out on how to use it. Lol I don’t need any more sight glasses but keep your eyes open for odd testing equipment as I’m always ready to horse trade.

An alkaline boiler water pH of 9 or higher will erode the sight glass where it is in contact with the water. In a higher pressure boiler than the one you took the sightglass from, it sounds like a shotgun going off when it thins enough to explode. A copper or brass washer is used next to the nut to keep the rubber gasket from grabbing the nut and making it difficult to tighten.

The second I saw him mention the texture of the glass, I knew there must be someone explaining the science in the comments. And equally sure I was that there would be some wanker shouting "First!" Double edged sword, the comment section...

I'll send you a new 12" sight glass and washers, is it 5/8 inch OD?
@RinoaL

yeah it looks to be 5/8 OD. what kind of pressure rating would your glass have? id like to run my boiler around 100psi if possible. if you send me a sightglass i can do a video blowing up this one with steam. :D
@jimwalsh6453

Its plain glass rod, which is rated at 400psi max. According to Grainger. I'll get it sent to you, keeping making great videos.

Please read ASME B31.1 and B31.3 before construction or reconstruction of your boiler. Also, your welder isn't going to cut it for building a boiler. Your local Pipefitters or Boilermakers might be able to help.

As usual, I'm probably way off base here but a few neurons keep nagging.... "I wonder if the eroded glass tube can be replaced with one of the quartz tubes from that old heater". Probably not. 😁

These systems leaks steam on purpose. Keeps the humidity up in the building. Sounds like your friend is planing on building a brewery there. That system could of been used to run his brew house. Would of saved him almost $20,000. I build breweries for a living.

Do you still get revenue if I skip the add after 5 seconds? I know some adds are not able to be skipped, I don't mind watching adds to support the channel, I subscribe to hundreds of channels so patreon isn't for me. I hope the add revenue gets you a better income and you can buy as much Romanian Rum chocolate as you desire
