Automotive engine de-greaser does NOT dissolve salt. White vinegar or CLR Cleaner will dissolve calcium and salt deposits from engine and internal cooling parts, both harmless to plastics, rubber and metal parts - not to mention, white vinegar is very economical !

GUNK Official - here is just a suggestion from a consumer who does not have your level of understanding about your product and who is here looking for education and practical techniques. I have absolutely no idea what this part of your comment means; "designed to have low VOC's so it's safer to use". The GREATEST thing about Born Again Boating's channel is that he is an accomplished, knowledgeable, master marine technician and he has the ability to take the complex and make it simple to understand. I am looking at the notes I took while watching this video and I had GUNK degreaser/cleaner and GUNK protector/shine on my shopping list. Somebody else commented that white vinegar is superior in dissolving salt. So as somebody who will never have Aaron's level of skill, or your in depth knowledge of GUNK'S product line, but who is determined not to stay completely ignorant either, since I have no idea what "designed to have low VOC's so it's safer to use" means I'm not sure whether to buy the GUNK products or just white vinegar? The marginal cost difference between the purchases is not significant to me, I want the "better" product to protect my 20+ year old small outboard. This video of Born Again Boating SOLD me on your GUNK products, now another commenter has me questioning that decision, and I am unable to use your comment to help me decide. Knowing me I'll probably buy, and use, all of the above just to make sure I get the best result.

Now I’m going to sound daft! Cleaning is part of the pride of ownership. You’ve worked hard, spent a lot of money and have something to show for it. If you look after it you get a better connection with what is essentially an inanimate object. The big but, for all the naysayers, is that when you go to sell it yours will sell quicker and for more cash than the unloved heap of junk that’s also up for sale in the boatyard. If that’s not a good enough reason to look after and clean your boat, bike or car I don’t know what is. Great series of videos and I may be in a cooler part of the world but the water is still salty over here. Stay safe!

@BornAgainBoating
5 жыл бұрын
A lot of times the water gets forced in depending on how the spray comes off the hull and the trim tabs. Even a transducer can cause a lot of spray up towards the cowlings. Plus, these two-part cowlings, aren't the most watertight cowlings. Don't get me wrong, I love these cowlings compared to the one-piece, extremely heavy cowlings. That's probably beacuse they are light and easy to mess with :) but then also whenever the seas are rough and you're fighting fish, just the wave action on the back of the boat can force water into the cowlings and then it just creates a salty engine lol

Great video! I just bought a 2017 Lund wc14 with a 2017 Evinrude 25hp. It's in near new condition, but gonna clean it up a bit anyway. Liked and subscribed.

Hi. Really appreciate your page and all the great info. I have a 2016 250hp Optimax w/ 260hr on a 21ft Contender. -What additional info, pro-tips or tweaks, in addition to whats in this video, would you recommend when cleaning my Opti? Im a novice and dont want to do something dumb. There seem to be a lot of electronic connections on the Opti vs this engine. -Also what are your thoughts regarding 656 vs fluid film vs the yamaha product you described here for protection after cleaning? -I was told I can spray the CRC656 literally on everything (plastic, rubber, metal). True? Avoiding intake and flywheel of course. MANY thanks!

Thank you! You can just be a little more selective when spraying the engine down. When it comes to the 656, I don't have a lot of experience with that specific product, but as long as it is not petroleum based like wd-40 I don't see why you couldn't use it the same way the others are used :) Hope this helps!

Born Again Boating could the wd40 silicone lubricant be use to spray the whole engine?

In my opinion, I’d go a couple steps further & run the boat for 15-20 minutes to dry it out, then spray it down with Corrosion Block…🤓

Wow great results! And wow 2000 hrs on a merc! I personally love mercury and my beloved boat has a 3.0 MPI mercruiser but I don’t think you hear about many mercs lasting that long! Great products, wish they got the word out more!

Thank you! That's actually becoming pretty common for their outboards :) we don't see a lot of Mercruiser's down here, the saltwater just eats them up :( These guys usually change out their engines every 2-3 years with about 3-4K hours on them lol

Great video. Glad I found this channel. Subscribed! Any reason you can’t use salt away on the engine? Thanks and GOD bless.

I have a 1987 2288 Cuddy Walk Around with a 4.3 L OMC Cobra sterndrive! It has been docked in salt water all summer every summer since I bought it in 1995! I did a re-power in 1998! I flush my engine and wash the engine apartment after every use! My engine looks just as good today as it did back then! The one piece OMC exhaust manifolds lasted me 10 years which then I replaced them with Direct replacement 1 piece stainless steel headers that have sacrificial Anodes! I will never have to replace them, They are just as good today as when I installed them in 08! Those headers were the best thing I have ever installed on an engine! Less heat, A lot lighter, More room in the engine compartment and better fuel economy! As well as an extremely long service life! I have been a mechanic for over 20 years! Due to my parents working I got to spend every summer with my grandparents at their Beachhouse! When my grandfather passed away in 1985 he left me his 1964 Thompson Chris Craft that had a all natural mahogany deck! I had to wash that boat down after every use and install a canvas cover that went from bow light to the transom and then over the engine cover! That is where I learned the importance of keeping your boat clean when boating in salt water! When I sold that boat in 1995 it shined just as good as it did in 1964! If anyone doubts my story shoot me your email and I will provide pictures covering a time span of over 40 years growing up on the water! Thank you Pop Pop and Grams for blessing me with the best 42 years a boy could ask for! RIP UNTIL WE FISH AGAIN! 🛥

The lift truck in the background is it a Hoist? And if so how is it working out for you?
@BornAgainBoating
5 жыл бұрын
No, it's a Wiggins and it's actually really nice. The tires don't seem to be holding up as well as you would think, but it's been pretty good for the most part.

We have the same problem. With a little research I found out good year is the only one they had a patent on the non-marking rubber compound and they don’t make it anymore

Really? The old fork lift was also a wiggins and tires would last at least a couple years. These are falling apart and at less than a year old! They just have chunks falling off all over the yard! It's crazy! Do you guys run on rocks or on concrete?
@patrickrolf482

We run on concrete. The tires you need are made by Mono-Matic-Soft shoe and never buy a Hoist they suck but then again Toyota bought them out so will see

Hi. Love the vids ...i could do this for life too . What blue grease are you using when doing the general maintenance? (Ask if you can; reliability wise , what brand you prefer?)
@BornAgainBoating
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The blue grease is Johnson Evinrude Triple Guard Marine Grease ( Here's a link for it on Amazon: amzn.to/328IvD9 ) This is pretty good stuff, I like Mercury's High-Performance Grease too though: ( High Performance Grease: amzn.to/303EE8h Then their 2-4-C is good too: amzn.to/2LthKDc ) The only thing about Mercury's grease is that I don't think you can get it in a tube like you can the Evinrude stuff. I like the tube and a little brush because I use a lot of it!
@Danidasanic

@@BornAgainBoating the 2-4-c is what i have here but i have to agree , that blue grease can with the brush is way easier to use . (I got a tube to use with a gun)

If I run in freshwater, do I still need a degreaser?
@BornAgainBoating
5 жыл бұрын
Depends on how dirty the engine is. If it's pretty clean, then no, just a quick rinse down should be fine. In freshwater, you might not even have to worry so much about it! What's it look like under your cowling?
