4 жыл бұрын
@@wouldntyouliketoknow1840 It depends on the person, but from my experience, people throwing away my items or trying to 'secretly' remove my items makes me want to shut the door and never let them in again. Back in the day, I had more stuff (not like her, but a lot) and I opened up to my autism-caretaker about wanting to search through stuff together. Instead, she told me we would "get rid of that pile of junk." I said that's not what I wanted, she said that's what she was able to do for me. "The Spartan way is the only way", she said (that's an expression in my language for a harsh and violent way.) I told her I needed to go to the toilet and in there, I cried and tried to get my courage together. I was going to tell her that I wanted someone else to help, not her. When I came back, she got angry and I then noticed the empty spot on the table, where my handcrafted deer-ears (from felt) had been. I'd been sewing on those the entire morning, I was planning on making a christmas-headband and the ears were nearly finished. I asked her where they were and she said she instantly threw them away, because it was all trash anyway. I took them back out of the bin and refused to let her back in my house. She was the only available candidate to help me, so I didn't get any help for half a year. I felt depressed, I kept shopping to forget the bad feelings, I tried to clean on my own, it was too overwhelming. Then my mom stepped in and got another lady to help me. Within a year (she came weekly) we removed about 10 shoppingbags out of my tiny-tiny-one-room-home. There are another 5 waiting to be sold/given away (difficult now with corona) but I feel good about it, because I was given responsibility and I trust her not to throw out my items. Many things were purchased for an emotional reason. I had to work through that and now I understand whý I bought them. And I can avoid buying those things again, in the future. I learned a lot. I still don't let the Spartan-lady near my home, so she had to search for new clients, one of which was an acquaintance of mine. They had a fight when she tried to throw away a girl's shoes ("because the edges were dirty") and now she's no longer welcome there either. I'm telling you, give them the chance to pick this up, they will surprise you if you do. I still buy stuff, but now I can control it. I replace any "broken" items that I found, with proper items that I need. I give away things I don't need and replace them with useful items. I'm an artist, the "flow" of items must continue, but it needs to be a controlled flow and I am in control of it.
@amandaroman3471

She is. They are t throwing her stuff out only trying to sort into different piles. She’s overwelmed a because for years she never had to deal with any emotions just shoved them back in and went shopping to feel better so now that she’s faced with it and can’t go shop to feel better... kinda like a drug addict who uses to suppress their sadness and pain ... she has to be uncomfortable to learn. That she can do it she can part with items and she isn’t going to die doing so.... once she can get thru these panic attacks it’ll get easier and easier and soon she will have the mindset of ok I’m sad but I’ll call my friend and talk to feel better or to sit down and have a cry and think about it etc not I feel bad let’s go shopping. If this makes sense sorry if I’m rambling on. It’s 3 am. :)

I agree on the friend but I don’t think she meant harm honestly just something she’s never seen and wasn’t prepared for ... It’s hard watching a hoarder get upset and overwelmed but in reality they have to. They need to learn how to feel and be uncomfortable and get thru it without shopping to feel better and suppress the feelings down deeper. Here we see all those feelings coming back up and she can’t go shop to feel better again. Eventually this will change her mind set to knowing she won’t die if she feels bad or has to part with items it’s not gonna kill her:::: she likely hasn’t actually dealt with any emotions in many years:

It caused me to do poorly in school and feel socially isolated but now as a 22 year old I can see how enveloped my mom was in her own depression and anxiety and didn’t have any support from my dad or her parents. I’ve worked with her for YEARS to declutter and still every time I go home to visit the first day I’m there is spent cleaning with her so I can feel comfortable in the space while I’m there. I really don’t think it can be simplified to them ‘choosing’ anything, it’s a mental health issue that overwhelms them. I’ve seen it with my own mom and I still loved her to death. People who watch need to understand it’s not just a pile of stuff you simply just get rid of...or that she’s being lazy.’it’s far deeper. It’s important to not only see the good but the bad times as well so we can understand what this does to someone’s mind and home .... and if we know someone who hoards perhaps seeing this would help them decide it’s far more serious than they had previously thought:.: Or even someone just starting to hoard so they can see what it may lead to .... ...may actually end up helping people :) Besides that anyone appearing on the show has to sign off on the material used so I’m sure she agrees to have this included. I think it's interesting that hoarders are always so disorganized. i guess it's part of the disorder. like, you don't see hoarders that are super organized, categorizing and arranging their treasures. i wonder why disorganization seems to be part of it.

The dr was really nice and kept her cool and knew to get Nancy out. The friend wasn't trying to be mean but saying stuff like "this is horrible" "i can't help you" just isn't helpful. Also the cleaning crew looked like the ycould not give 2 fucks- I know I know they're helping and thats super nice but obvs Nancy has some underlying issues attached to this stuff. It's not easy for her to just throw it out like any other person could-there's mental stuff there, hoarding is almost always related to internal issues. She's clutching on to things as a perception of control and in this video loses it and breaks down. Poor lady

My stomach tied in knots with the psychiatrist said “Nancy.. gets the final decision on everything.” That was a huge mistake - she should have known better and that Nancy would understand that statement to mean that she got to say what happened to every item in her house. I know she probably would have fallen apart no matter what, but that definitely made things worse, as anyone who has seen any of these hoarding clean-up shows would expect.

Nancy is supposed to be able to have the final say because she has to learn how to make decisions on what to keep. Otherwise, she'll keep hoarding the house up. Also, they feel powerless and out of control if everyone else decides for her.

Norma is really unhelpful. She says how for years, Nancy had asked for help and apparently had not helped her. Then, she reacted very emotionally to being in the home, by saying things like 'I'm paralysed now!", "My God, this is overwhelming. I can't even look in there. You know what, Nancy, this would cause me to have a breakdown, a nervous breakdown". By saying things like that, she definitely did not help Nancy to feel like she could actually change something. Finally, the worst I thought was when she blamed Nancy for causing or at least worsening her husband's dementia. That is not how a "best friend" speaks about you on TV.

@@leahosborne9110 No matter how hard it was on Nancy or the grandmother or how many trauma's they have experienced, you have to admit this was not a clever method to engage with her. I love my mom to bits, but if I feel overwhelmed and she says; 'Emma I feel you need to this this this and this and that and blah blah and such and NO I AM SPEAKING NOW THIS THIS THIS THIS' then I hang up the phone. And I text her; Not now, tell it to me later.' Even people that care for you, can be overwhelming and rude. Doesn't mean they're bad people, but they acted the wrong way. Clearly that's what Nancy did. The whole commentsection agrees. Doesn't mean she's a bad person. But it would've been better if she hadn't done that.

I had an autism-tutor that tried to throw my stuff away, without me being there (I was on the toilet for a while, getting my emotions sorted and she took the chance and threw my sewing-work in the bin, that I'd been working on that morning.) I banned her from the house (she was then send away by other people too, awful woman, kept ruining people's lifes) and for half a year, I had no help at all. Then my mother stepped in and made sure I had another lady to help me. Within a year (she came weekly, an hour or two) we removed about 10 shoppingbags out of my tiny-tiny-one-room-home. There are another 5 waiting to be sold/given away (difficult now with corona) but I feel good about it, because I was given responsibility and I trust her not to throw out my items. And she understands whý I kept things and will say; 'Is there a way you can use that, rather than 'hoard' it? Would you like to gift that to someone? Why did you buy it? Where would you want to keep it?' Everything in a non-judgemental way, understands véry well if I want to keep things and also understands if I buy new stuff (a normal amount) and will help me to sort through the old stuff. Usually if I buy something new, I can then throw out the 'old' version. Like slippers/flipflops or toothbrushes, youknow? Many decorative things were purchased for an emotional reason. I had to work through that and now I understand whý I bought them. And I can avoid buying those things again, in the future. I learned a lot.

Widdeku, I see your multiple comments on here on what helps you since you're autistic. It won't work for this woman since her husband has dementia is stuck in a nursing home that costs quite a lot and the house HAS to be cleaned within a certain amount of time. Although she will receive therapy and organization therapy afterwards.
