I agree that wax and propolis, like grease from cooking, should never go down the drain. With a bit of warm/hot water in the pipe, it will glue itself to the pipes necessitating an expensive visit buy a plumber. That said, NEVER use heat (even warm water) to clean your harvesting equipment! Warm/hot temperatures cause the wax and propolis to stick to the equipment - exactly as you showed us. Don’t use even more heat (a torch) to burn off the mistake of using heat. Instead, right from the start of clean-up, spray it with a blast of COLD water from your garden hose. Cold water makes the wax and propolis crumbly which is easy to blast off along with honey residue. Sometimes, you might need to finish with a nylon brush and COLD soapy water. A power washer with COLD water is also useful on something large and deep like my 20-frame extractor. The only damage to my harvesting equipment has been caused by borrowers using heat to clean it. Now, i tell them to bring my stuff back dirty so I can clean it properly -- with COLD water.

When cleaning strainers like this, heat is NOT your friend. I notice at the end you use cold water with a cribber. I actually just take them outside and hose them down with a powerful stream of cold water. They come clean almost immediately with NO scrubbing.

Thanks for this idea! I don't have a propane torch, but I used the method that I sometimes use to take the skin off peppers - I held the strainer over my kitchen stove flame with tongs, and knew it was working when it started to smell like someone blew out the candles on their birthday cake.

Use an ordinary wire kitchen strainer to remove the wax first - they clean up easier, and they are cheap

Hmmm, if you think about it, a flame thrower will clean most anything, clean it real good. Pretty sure it's a waste of time and money though while we still have bees and water.

Thanks for the great video! Only thing it's kind of hard to hear you, I have the volume all the way up and my computer volume all the way up. You might want to tie your hair back, especially outside!

I just bought a strainer for kitchen and made red sauce using peppers. ONG it’s a mess inside the two layers, being it’s double layer. Who’d of thunk it? Not me. Sheesh.

I simply put mine out and let the bees clean it. Wax and propolis is dry at that point, then you can simply brush it off, then into the dishwasher. That was easy

No brainer , bees clean it leaving flacky wax which brushes off.

This whole mess is avoided by never letting hot water touch wax or propolis, which causes it to be glued to the screen. Also don't rub it and get it worked into the screen.

Flame heat will eventually destroy the wire. I find hot water usually works particularly in a jet not soaking then any small amounts of wax in the mesh will blow out with compressed air. Larger amounts of wax or propolis stuck on equipment comes off real easy with universal thinners from the autoshop. Our local chain of auto products regularly have it on 50% discount and I stock up.

I use my heat gun to melt/evaporate the last tiny spots of wax in the two filters. Best done outdoors.

Ufff, I don't like this, seems as a bad thing for the strainer. I just pressure wash everything with cold water after honey harvest.

Pear burner is a good idea, but lots of non-country folks may not have one. A plain ole shop utility torch like a Benz-o-matic works great. Get one with the piezo electric trigger for more convenience.

I don’t care about the other comments. Yes heat from a torch may eventually be bad for the mesh but it seems it would take a long time. I’m going to trying it. The one I’m having trouble cleaning is the first strainer where I’ve pushed the wax down to keep extracting. I’m a backyard beekeeeper and found your video after trying everything to clean my new mesh strainer. I can’t wait to go do it today! a thank you!

I clean mine with cold water first, this will make the wax brittle, then wash with hot water, hang to dry. Done!!! .......
