The Gem Safety Razor: A Nearly Two-Century Journey
With a history dating back almost 200 years, the Gem Safety Razor has earned numerous distinctions. During the early 1900s, it reigned as the best-selling razor of its kind. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't the first safety razor to emerge.
Preceding the Gem Safety Razor was the Star Razor, introduced in 1875 by the Kampfe Brothers, cutlery manufacturers who began crafting it in a one-room shop in New York City. Notably, one of their former employees, Jerry Reichard, patented the Gem Safety Razor. In 1898, he founded The Gem Safety Company, propelling the Gem Safety Razor into worldwide fame.
As the years passed, competitive pressures led to a name change in 1900, rebranding it as The American Safety Razor Company. In 1903, Jerry Reichard, the founder of Gem Safety Razors, departed to establish The Yankee Company. Ultimately, in 1906, these two firms, along with Star Safety Razors, merged to become The Personna American Safety Razor Company, which is known today as The American Safety Razor Company.
Today, this company continues to produce Treet, Personna, Pal, and Gem razor blades, consistently challenging Gillette Razor Company's dominance for over a century. Notably, disposable razors, particularly women's razors like the Flicker in 1971, have been their recent top sellers.
