I started doing a massive declutter in my craft room (which has creeped into decluttering the conservatory and my clothes when the craft room has stressed me out too much). I’ve been selling items on FB to raise some cash for new clothes and so I don’t have to deal with shipping (I have over 200 lots up, sold about half). Thanks for saying if you don’t get anything done today it’s not like it’s getting worse, I really needed to hear that. While I have everything out to sort I can’t create as much and I feel like I’m turning into a stick. I thought the issue was clutter but it is actually the lack of creativity that is bugging me. The excess mental noise from things being out is driving me nuts. I also have so many empty containers, I feel like I should sell those too but people keep telling me to keep them? Surely if I don’t have enough stuff to fill them, I don’t need them? I do have a craft project I need to do, I need to make a holder for my disabled badge, but for some reason I’m putting it off. I thought I was resisting accepting I’m disabled but it’s not like I don’t get reminded of that when I’m using the badge without a cover.

You can keep a portion of the empty containers if you want, against future organizing in other areas of your space, but select ones that you didn't really like or are breaking or hard to use the lid or really oversized etc., and pass those along. You can reduce the volume without getting rid of all the options. When you feel totally complete in your organizing project, then you can do a final pass of empty containers. As far as the badge holder goes - sounds like you could ask yourself some questions to see what's making you hesitate. Are you unsure of what you actually want to do? Is your vision really elaborate and that feels overwhelming? Does a crafty badge holder just not grab you as a creative idea - I mean does it not sound like fun? No wrong answers to any of that - just looking for info. You don't have to do a perfect holder right now. You can do an easy one, and do another one in the future. You can buy a badge holder and use it until you feel crafty about making a holder. If you're hesitating right now, you can just honor that feeling and find another solution until you feel ready. Good luck!

@@TheClutterFairy Thanks for replying to me, I think I’m going to just keep the long skinny ones for draws as they are the most useful to me, and the big ones because we will most likely be moving in 6 months. Everything else can be donated, maybe to a local organiser? Most of the others never worked for me so I’d rather get a new on for the purpose I need it for later. The badge project is probably just because it’s boring if I’m honest. It’s also because my desk is covered in items I’m sorting so the inertia to get started is too high right now! Plus life is hard right now, I might have to finish the decluttering and have some fun stuff to play with before I tackle that one. Thanks for helping me work that out. It’s weird how we can feel guilty about the most stupid stuff that really doesn’t matter at all!

One of my biggest barriers to decluttering is that it's BORING. So what helps is great music. Especially peppy music. My personal go-to is the Beatles album Rubber Soul. But also a fun or interesting podcast helps. I like history so a cool history podcast helps me immensely to get through boring chores!

Thank you Gayle! You are such an inspiration to me. I’ve been decluttering for 3 months taking trunk loads to donation center which makes me feel better knowing someone will be blessed with each item I’m no longer using or need to hold onto. I’m downsizing from 26 years of accumulating and although a great deal of items have been donated, it seems as if it is barely noticeable. Most of the clutter has been well organized and hidden apparently. Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you again for your insights on decluttering our lives.

It's time to slow down your work a bit then. If you're spending all your free time organizing, and not getting any rest or having any fun, I'm not surprised you feel overwhelmed. Better to split your weekends up. Spend one day relaxing and one day organizing. Everyone needs some rest and recuperation, so make sure you get one day a week at least.

I never thought about the fact that our clutter/home is one of the things that we are capable of changing in our lives right now. Brilliant! I would like to see in writing the five decluttering versions of changing your life. I can remember some: Sit in a quiet space...Write down things you are grateful for...Do a random act of kindness (eg. donate clutter to a charity)...That's all I can remember right now. I'm sure you can say it better. Also can you tell me the name of the previous video which referenced those five things. Thank you for everything you do.

The Clutter Fairy's 5-Step Daily Practice to Support a Clutter-Free Life: * Post on your social media channels every time you accomplish a clutter reducing task * Take a moment to write about the experience of letting go of something, or call a friend to talk about it. * Set a timer and declutter for 15 minutes a day, or do the 10-things exercise - pick up 10 things to trash or recycle, and 10 things to donate each day. * Sit still in a decluttered space and focus on how you feel. Try a furniture store display room, or a model home, or a friend's house whose space you admire - any space you find appealing. Do you feel peaceful and calm? Is it restful and soothing to be there? Notice how your mind feels in this environment. That's the feeling you want to have in your own home. * Give something away as a donation and tell us about it on KZitem or your other social media outlets. Be supportive of someone else on their decluttering journey. Focus your random acts of kindness on helping others via your organizing journey.

I had to leave Facebook for many reasons, harassment and politics being two of them -- wondering if you could switch your "Live" events here to KZitem? @TamiMartin is right. You need recovery time - we don't bounce back as fast as we used to do. Did you have a bout of Covid? If you did you'll likely need twice as long to recover as normal, but either way don't fret. You can start with a very small project, like processing the current mail that came in while you were sick, or going through some old photos. Something that you can do on the couch with some mental energy and not much physical energy.

Thank you, Gayle and Ed. Being surrounded by the clutter of unfinished projects, unused craft or organizing supplies, purchases with no place they belong, boxes of stuff awaiting sorting, etc. is like living in a museum of failure. But the habits are so strong, we try to comfort, distract and console ourselves by buying MORE of the same kind of stuff. Like this time it will be different. It seems to me that the most effective way to deal with this situation is to just "do it" as the Nike ads say. Just pluck the first plastic grocery bag you see from the nearest cr@p-pile and start shoving obvious and unmistakable trash into it. When the bag is full, take it out to the trash. Don't put it in a corner to take out later. Take it out now. It will be that much easier to pluck and fill the next one. Create momentum/shatter inertia.

Sometimes i move my collections to different storage, but do not actually decide to give away, shred, recycle, or throw anything out. In other words, very little actually leaves my living space. This is called "churning" my belongings. A relative helped me in April and May of 2023 to actually give away and recycle a lot. Today i am listening to the Clutter Fairy and hoping i can let go of some stuff.
