YES! I had the same acne problems as you some years ago and I tried EVERYTHING, I tried birth control....that was a disaster, I tried antibiotics....those didn’t work. Then my derm told me about Spiro and my face cleared up really fast...about 3 months like you said. To me that was fast considering how long I struggled with the acne. People can’t believe that I once had such bad hormonal acne. I’ve been taking it for over 5 years and all my annual physicals have come back with glowing results, so it is very gentle on your system over time. I still get a few breakouts, but that’s around that time of the month and it’s totally normal....nothing as bad as it used to be! I always suggest people look into it when they ask me....it was definitely the answer! I’m so glad it’s working for you!

I then began using Tretinoin Cream 0.025%, and stuck with that through the purge phase, and it did indeed clear up my skin and give me the best texture I’ve ever had. Be careful with Spironolactone ladies. I experienced dizzy spells, muscle weakness and fatigue when I used it. I also looked tired and my skin was very dry all while drinking about 2 liters or more of water per day. You also have to watch your potassium intake which may be difficult if you eat a lot of fruit and veggies. Just watch your body closely if you choose to try it. There are women who have experienced severe side effects from this medication.

Of course as with any prescription medication, your doctor/dermatologist will monitor how your body reacts, advise on what you should/shouldn’t do while on it, alter your prescription if necessary, or find alternative solutions. Everyone’s body reacts to all products differently. This is just the solution that works for me specifically!

There’s actually really a lack of research that supports drinking water actually hydrates your skin. It’s more a common believed misconception. Everyone, If you looking for a over the counter natural replacement for Spironolactone I suggest taking the supplement DIM (DIINDOLYLMETHANE). I have had acne for over 20 years and was on YAZ (birth control) & Spironolactone. While both did work wonders I wanted a more natural option. So in 2018 I stopped taking YAZ and 3 months ago introduced DIM (DIINDOLYLMETHANE) supplement 100mg/ per day and it worked just liked the Spironolactone & YAZ. It does the same thing as Spironolactone (blocking androgens). I take it every morning and my cystic hormonal acne is practically gone. I do get 1 cyst around the time of my cycle but nothing like the 6-8 cysts before.

@@Vinetriaa I am still taking it! It started clearing up my active breakouts really well. To the point where I went an entire menstrual cycle w/ no active breakouts (which hasn't happened for the last 3 years at least), but I got off track and had to stop taking it b/c of COVID-19 closures. My derm had to cancel my appointment to do my bloodwork (they check every so often to make sure that your potassium levels are okay b/c spiro can increase them), so they couldn't refill my prescription in time. I'm back on it and it's helping. My derm recently put me on Aczone gel in the AM and Aklief (retinoid) for the PM as well. We'll see what happens. I think it'll take at least 6 months to show drastic changes. Best of luck to you!

Sam ee Yes, everyone’s body reacts differently to medicines, so I can only say what my experience has been. I have not experienced hair loss while using spironolactone. I have had my hair in box braids the entire time I’ve been using it and haven’t noticed any excessive shedding or hair loss in between me taking my braids down. I also haven’t noticed extreme growth, my hair has been “normal.” Aklief is expensive, I’ve heard it’s because it’s a new medicine (retinoid) and sometimes insurance plans don’t cover very new medicines to start? I live in NYC and my derm recommended that I send it to a delivery pharmacy instead of my usual Duane Reade/Walgreens. She said they have “coupons” to lower the cost and she was right. I only paid my co-pay and the cost of my Spiro and other acne creams she prescribed me ($45 total), but I did see that the Aklief was billed at ~$545 on my insurance.. I can’t explain further why it ended up being free for me, I genuinely don’t know!

However now that my accutane journey is done, I am getting mild hormonal and mask irritation acne as I have to wear a mask 9 or 10 hrs a day. @@daniellegrant1141 i discontinued it cos it was making my skin much lighter. I am not very dark, not light skin either and i like to keep it that way. Spiro update: Asked my Doc to take me off (it made me pee alot, lol) and prescribe something topical since i do not get break outs anymore, she did and i am now on Winlevi. I apply it twice a day and at night alongside the tretinoin. No noticeable change but no new bumps as well so i am good. Dark spots about 98% gone so i’ll say pretty good results overall.

@@Queen-bx9dp I’m on winlevi too!! Been using it for almost 4 months now.. along with tretinoin 0.05% & doxycycline 200mg. the results in the beginning were AMAZING my skin cleared up .. couple weeks ago i had a major breakout from my cycle and now it’s like I’m back to square one w/cysts and dark marks are back. Do you think spiro worked better on your acne compared to winlevi or the same
@Queen-bx9dp

@deannawashington i stopped the winlevi because i had really bad breakouts after a couple of months 😢 i am back on spiro, i don’t mind the constant bathroom trips, lol. I used to take my spiro at night but i now take it first thing in the morning so i get to sleep in peace.

I was nervous about taking the pill since my dermatologist said low sex drive could be a side effect. So he prescribed the topical version. So will it be the same amount as well 3 months to see improvement I suppose ?

What do you mean by breaking out ? Like worse acne or rashes ? If rashes it may be an allergic reaction. Which may mean u should lower the dosage

Did you tell your provider? If they’re from a PCP maybe they can refer you to a derm, and in the meantime they could maybe up the dose if possible? Best of luck to us sufferers. As long as we don’t judge appearances we will never be ugly.
