Ah, isn't exploring music fun! I started by listening to some Liszt and then Google'd his Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. Then, I discovered some of his contemporaries from reading the Wiki article. Then, I found out Liszt had a piano duel with someone called Thalsberg. In the comments of the Liszt-Thalsberg video was someone who said (and I paraphrase) "did you know Mozart also had a duel with Clementi?". And here I am, having discovered two new composers: Thalsberg and Clementi, and am enjoying even more music than I had to enjoy before. Yess!

The opening language of this wonderful work was, of course, stolen (borrowed) by Mozart for his Magic Flute Overture after hearing Clementi perform it before Emperor Joseph II in 1781, 10 years prior to writing the opera.

Yes, but the contrapuntal development of it in the overture is still indicative of his melodic skills. Yasunori Mitsuda did quite the same thing with certain tracks in Chrono Trigger.

Ascoltatele, grazie a tutti. Trentadue Domenico

Muzio Clementi had a hardly overestimated influence on younger pianists and piano composers. Beethoven's piano writing about was based for some time to Clementi's style of 1780s and 1790s. Some of the most successful pianists of the 1820s and 1830s were his students.

Mozart was a great musician without any doubt but he is, like all humans, the fruit of his time. Influenced by many musicians, of whom, it must be said, many Italians. It is not right to deify only some musicians and belittle others. Paying homage to Clementi and saying that he influenced Mozart and Beethoven does not mean diminishing the greatness of these great musicians.

I personally prefer Mozart, but everybody can think what he/she wants. I love Mozart (and I am Italian too!) :D
@MrSpadasa

Dafne Eleutheria I totally agree with you on this matter, Dafne. The emperor might have liked this Sonata more than the selection Mozart had prepared for the duel with Clementi, and in fact Clementi won, but I'm sure Mozart must have screamed to them: "The emperor (Clementi) has no clothes!" Clementi could play trillos, scales, arpeggios, double octaves better than anybody else at the time, but most of his music (and it's the case here) is empty compared to Mozart's. Or to be more fair, it's dated, it completely represent the taste of the time without having that forward thinking, that uniqueness that makes Mozart's music such a classic. I regret having had to suffer through Clementi in my piano education and this Sonata in particular, which is technically very difficult, when I could have spent my time better studying Mozart's stunning piano works. But it's true, +obrcht, Clementi was very influential on the development of piano music. And this Sonata influenced not only Beethoven with the hammering double octaves and double thirds in the piano sonatas op.2 n.2 and op.2 n.3 but it influenced (hear, hear!) also Mozart himself. Just listen to the ouverture of "The Marriage of Figaro" and you'll see a curious similarity between that theme and the first theme of Clementi's op. 24 n.2. Yet there is no compare. It's like Mozart had taken Clementi's theme and turned it into something absolutely divine.

He was glad Mozart took his theme cause he could sell more (it was like free advertisement for him) and even compose a piano transcription of Mozart's Overture on his theme. Clementi lost cause his compositions are crap. Whereas Mozart looked into future with his Rondo in A minor K.511 (which foreshadows Chopin) and Fantasia in C minor K.475 (which foreshadows Beethoven), Clementi never wrote any masterpieces in music, even though he had twice more lifetime than Mozart. such a talentless one trick pony lol.
