I am an actor and got cast in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back for a whole week. It was a great experience. I had all of my scenes with Will Farrell. Unfortunately Kevin Smith seriously overshot on that film (I don't know if he always overshoots, but he did this film). So a lot of Will Farrell's scenes got cut out, hence all of my scenes got cut. You can still see me in some scenes, but all of my dialogue was cut. I finally bought the Criterion collection release of the movie on dvd. It was a 2 disc set because it included all of the cut scenes. There were tons of scenes cut out, but I finally got to see my scenes. I also got to meet Mark Hamill at the cast party.

The film was budgeted at around $27,000.00, financed by credit cards and Kevin selling off his comic book collection. The QuikStop and RST Video were where Kevin worked (both were owned by the same people), and Kevin shot at night, worked during the day, and once the film was shot, worked the store and edited when he wasn't at work. Helping him was the producer Scott Mosier (who played Willam aka Snowball, and the angry customer who yeeted the ball off the roof ending the hockey game), and Scott also worked at the store through the editing/post-production. It was shot in 16mm and in black and white to save money (black and white stock was cheaper to buy and process). Kevin had done a lot of writing skits in high school, so he got really inspired after seeing Richard Linklater's first film 'Slacker'. Originally, the role of Randall was written for Smith himself...but he got realistic about working in the store, directing, and acting in the film, and decided one had to take precedence. So, he created Silent Bob as the foil to his friend Jason Mewes aka Jay. Eventually, Kevin and the film got to Sundance, where I think it won the top honor, among other film festival honors. Miramax picked up distribution rights and it became a success. In 2019, it was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Since the film came out, Kevin bought and owns the QuikStop as well as a comic book store in Red Bank, NJ...'Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash'. There have been 2 sequels, an animated series, comic books, and several connected View Askewverse films, many featuring Jay and Silent Bob. Kevin not only directs those films but has done other films...and has directed a few episodes of the CW 'Arrowverse'/DC Comics TV shows like 'Supergirl'. He has script-doctored many big studio projects, even writing a Tim Burton-helmed, Nicholas Cage-starring 'Superman' movie that collapsed before being filmed. A lot of what Kevin also does is create his various SMODcasts, which are podcasts about comics, movies, and TV shows he loves and other topics. He also produced a number of very funny DVDs of his talks on university campuses around the country about him and his movies and experiences in Hollywood. His story about Tim Burton, Planet of The Apes, and the 'Chasing Dogma' comic he wrote is hysterical...and one of the reasons I despised Burton's 'Planet of the Apes'. Another film like 'Clerks' was made for about the same amount of money around the same time and another Sundance darling is 'The Brothers McMullen' by Edward Burns. It was shot in color and is about 3 Irish-American brothers and their love lives. Burns played Private Reiben in 'Saving Private Ryan'.

A little factoid: the original ending had Dante getting pew-pewed by Grizzly Adams, because Grizzly wanted money to buy drugs from Jay and Silent Bob, and the final line of dialogue is Dante saying "I wasn't even supposed to come in today!" as he passes away. Kevin Smith changed it because he wanted to make sequels and the View Askewniverse, and I guess just to prevent the the film from being too dark as well. You can probably find the original ending here on youtube.

Went to like a half a semester/year of film school then dropped out and made Clerks on $28k all put on credit cards. If you're not familiar with Slacker, it's essentially a series of conversations that take place all over Austin. Very low budget, like, pull your camera out and just start filming kind of low budget. Also, if you're interested in other low budget first films by writer/directors that really have their own style check out El Meriachi by Robert Rodriguez. He would do medical trials to earn money to make his movie and he did everything on that film. It also has 2 sequels, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

Kevin Smith's first movie, filmed at night at the convenience store where he was working. (Thus the shutters that don't work.) Not low-budget, more precisely _no_ budget, as Kevin paid for it by maxing out all his credit cards. (Thus the black-and-white, as he couldn't afford color film.) One of the highest-grossing films in relation to its budget, it launched his career. Great script, and the low budget / low talent acting somehow made it so much funnier since it looked and sounded so much like real life. I saw it in the theater and nearly got a hernia laughing.

I don't know if someone mentioned this, or if it's true; but, someone in another reaction's comment section said that the real ending was cut. It was that Dante was shot and killed by a robber right after Randall left and he was about to leave the store. I think the person said that Smith cut it because it because people didn't like it in the preview... Or was it because he wanted to keep it a comedy instead of having a shocking ending. I like the ending they went with. Dante dying would've changed Entire tone of the film

People call this a stoner movie, but I see it as the opposite. The entire theme of the movie is the need for Dante to actually grow up, and not just look like the most responsible person there, while he lets everyone walk all over him. He needs to take responsibility, pick a girl, and pick a path. Randall is both the muse of this and a rival trying to push Dante forward. Even Jay and Silent Bob are trying to push Dante forward. And as you correctly noted in the movie, almost every little detail mattered. Let's face it, stoners wouldn't catch the details if they're stoned. I was a senior in high school, when this came out. It's one of those movies, I can quote. Having Entered the rabbit hole of the View Askew universe, You really should see chasing Amy, mallrats, dogma, clerks 2, and Jay and silent Bob strike back,...

I have been watching all the view askewniverse movies since yesterday afternoon. You should continue the series and watch them all but Clerks 3 has things I really don't like so that one is optional. Kevin Smith maxed out his credit cards and sold his comic books to make this. He worked at the Quik Stop during the day and filmed at night only sleeping about 3 hours a day. The 2 reasons he filmed in black and white were 1 it was cheaper and 2 it was mostly filmed at night.

Another movie that is sort of filmed in this small space 1 day format is Friday.

The dialogue is hilarious. Its all about the dialogue cause there is no budget for anything fancy.

One of the better first films from a director, in my opinion. Amazing what you can do with no money and a dream. I don't get a lot of Smith's later movies but this one resonates big time. Thanks for reacting? Love the black and white and of course Jay and Silent Bob.

I used to work at Blockbuster and the customers in this film are not an exaggeration. Someone literally did the "do you have that one movie with that one guy?"

I worked at a record store & it was the same thing. They’d say, “I just heard this song on the radio, what was it??” How the fuck am I supposed to know, lol. Then, to make it worse, they’d try to sing it to me. The very worst part? Sometimes I knew what song they meant🤣

@@curalove Mine was "Do you have that Bruce Willis film with all the killing in it?" -- I still have no idea how I correctly got Last Man Standing on the first try from that description, as this was like 6 months after that title had dropped from the New Release Wall.

the black and white is a cost cutting measure. color stock almost doubles the shooting budget and requires more work from the director of photography

Idk if anyone pointed this out. Kevin Smith explained why the movie was Black and White. The fluorescent lights made everything look green with the camera they had. The only way to counter that was to go B&W. Publication ram with it and thought it was a conscious choice. Printed some pretentious crap about the director telling the story through the security cameras of the grocery store. When I’m truth they just didn’t have a good camera.

You can develop B/W film a lot cheaper. Especially if you have your own lab. Only had VHS/Beta for home use, so not an option.
