And yet it was a tremendous success on its release. I'm starting to wonder if all movies that don't become a franchise get forgotten, be they ever so successful. "Who framed Roger Rabbit?", "Robin Hood: Prince of thieves" and "Demolition man" are other examples. All of them huge blockbusters at the time, but not many people who weren't there seem to know about them nowadays. Because none of them got sequels?

My little sister did wilderness search and rescue, and the equipment failure death at the beginning reminds me of what one of her trainers said: "Our motto is. 'We're stupid.' In fact, we are so stupid that we have to check and double check everything to make sure we don't make any stupid mistakes."
@anonymes2884

Great motto :). Though it's less dangerous than it may seem, climbers do die in all kinds of "stupid" ways (abseiling off the end of your rope is surprisingly common for instance). That said, the death at the start is almost pure Hollywood - it's so close to impossible for a climbing harness to fail in that way that it effectively _is_ impossible (the harness' manufacturer even had them include a disclaimer in the credits stating that the harness was modified to fail for the movie). No amount of double checking would've helped. ('Cliffhanger' is a lot of fun IMO but it is to climbing what 'Die Hard' is to police work :)

This movie is dedicated in memory to Wolfgang Gulich, whom was Stallone's climbing double. He was sadly killed in a car accident on August 31, 1992. He was 31 years old. Nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Visual Effects Best Sound Editing Best Sound Mixing. It lost all 3 to JURASSIC PARK. It was a box office success, making $255 million dollars against a $70 million dollar budget. It's been labeled as "DIE HARD on a mountain." It was given an NC 17 rating due to the graphic violence, at least 5 minutes, was cut to get that film an R Rating.

Aside from Demolition Man, and all the Rocky and Rambo movies, Stallone has one more forgotten action movie. It’s called Daylight. The movie is kind of a throwback to the old disaster movies from the 70s, like The Poseidon Adventure. It’s about a tunnel collapse and Stallone is fighting to get the survivors out to, well, daylight. Get it? Ha! It’s solid and intense entertainment.

Cliffhanger was one of my favorites and one of the best action thrillers from 1993. So it was known as 'Die Hard on a mountain' and another Sly Stallone classic. This had one of the first-ever super bowl trailers with the music of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana: O Fortuna with split-second images. So pumped to see it on Memorial Day weekend. The suspense and drama were on par with each other. But it was the characters and the environment that (for me) drove the action sequences. I was age 13 at the time this movie came out and i loved it. Also had the video game on Sega CD and the cutscenes were footage from the actual movie. The director Renny Harlin made other hits. Die Hard 2 (1990), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) and Deep Blue Sea (1999), you gotta check these out.

Fun Facts: The large majority of the film's scenes were shot in the Dolomites in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. For example, the bridge scene was shot on Monte Cristallo in the via ferrata VF Ivano Dibona, which was reconstructed immediately after the movie. The climbing was mostly on the Tofane cliffs, and in some scenes toward the end of the movie the audience clearly sees the three Tofane, the Croda da Lago, and the town of Cortina; the location of this is on top of Mount Faloria, at the arrival of the funivia Faloria. In other scenes are the sentiero ferrato Astaldi, over the Rifugio Dibona. The small house has been constructed on the sand of the river Boite, in Fiames, close to the heliport. Some filming took place in Durango, Colorado. The credits of the film also thank the Ute Tribe for filming in the Ute Mountain reservation. Cliffhanger is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the costliest aerial stunt ever performed. Stuntman Simon Crane was paid $1 million to perform the aerial transfer scene, where he crossed between two planes at an altitude of 15,000 feet (4,600 m). The principal climbing doubles were Ron Kauk and Wolfgang Güllich. Kauk performed as Stallone's climbing double after Güllich died in a car accident in 1992. The doubles filled in for Stallone on most of the climbing scenes due to the actor's fear of heights; an injury to Stallone's hand, reported to have occurred on one of the cliffs, actually occurred on a soundstage.

In addition to Shoot to Kill, other people here mentioned The River Wild, with Meryl Streep, and Vertical Limit, with Chris O’Donnell. I cosign both of those. They’re good choices. Someone else mentioned Deliverance. I’d put that in another category entirely. Whereas Shoot to Kill, The River Wild, and Vertical Limit are fun, cheesy, action-packed thrillers, Deliverance is more of a slow burn character study. It was nominated for Oscars but don’t let that fool you. That movie has some of the most disturbing scenes I’ve ever seen onscreen. Deliverance is more aligned with Platoon or Full Metal Jacket- meaning, mentally you have to be prepared to watch it.

It's not remotely hard to believe. Stallone wrote ALL the 'Rocky' movies and also directed most of them. And with a writing credit on 'Creed II' from 2018 and the most recent Rambo movie from 2019 he clearly wrote/writes a lot in his _older_ days too :). (Stallone is much more a _filmmaker_ in general than specifically an actor - he's directed more movies than some full time directors do in their entire careers and written more produced screenplays than many full time writers)

"Tango and Cash" should be near the top of your list because it also stars Kurt Russell!!!

Edit: Demolition Man is a great action comedy with Stallone and Sandra Bullock, highly recommend. My crap memory can't pull up other great mountain movies or stranded in the arctic/antarctic movies, although they certainly exist. Yessss! A great action movie just stays classic. I love what they did with Hal's character too. Truly wanted Stallone dead for dropping his girlfriend, but instantaneously sacrifices himself to warn Stallone when criminals threaten them both. John Lithgow was a fantastic villain, and later did a great supporting role in Dexter.
