The Cliffhanger Trail is an easily accessible 5.5-mile trail that can be found right off Highway 89A, between Cottonwood and Sedona. The trail takes the shape of a "Y" and includes the "Cliffhanger" shelf road which descends to a hiking trailhead below. It eventually finishes at the trailhead located on Red Rock Loop Road.
Most of the Cliffhanger trail can be covered in a high clearance stock vehicle running 4 high gear, as it is mostly comprised of hard-packed dirt with some smaller rock ledges, protruding rocks, and bedrock. However, the most challenging section of the trail lies between waypoints 8-11 and is optional, requiring high clearance and 4 low gear. It has loose rock sections, rock ledges, and steep drop-offs on the sides of the trail. A disconnecting sway bar and rear lockers would be helpful in this section.
Overall, the trail is a great choice for someone who is getting more aggressive in their off-roading but not quite ready for rock crawling.
