The Japanese pilot would have had no idea what Climb Mount Niitaka - Niitaka-yama Nobore meant as the crew would not have had access to secret communications let alone specific war codes. James Farentino should have told who the commanders were (Yamamoto and Nagumo), who planned it (Minoru Genda), and who would lead it (Mitsuo Fuchida). The pilot would have known that and realized 'the jig was up.'

Well he did list all of the carriers involved, and the pilot did seem to be putting 2 & 2 together at that point, as if he was thinking "wait a minute, he just named every carrier in our task force, how the hell could he know that?!".

Deleted scene from the move shows that the pilot was in the bathroom and Yamamoto came in and was using the next stall. Just before he took a huge s*** he yelled "Climb Mount Niitaka!" and made a huge explosion sound as his turd hit the water and then Yamamoto yelled "Die Yankees!" as he flushed. That's how the pilot knew.

@@michelletaylor5691 I'd rather think of it as historically sophisticated potty humor. I mean, come on, legendary Japanese Admiral Yamamoto taking a dump in a public restroom and yelling out the secret Pearl Harbor attack phrase just before launching his little brown "bomb"? I don't think a Fifth grader would even know who Yamamoto is. All that while tying real historical figures to a made up Japanese pilot in a Hollywood movie? Hardly the work of a unintellectual mind, if I may be so bold.

The movie resonates because Pearl Harbor still hurts - especially if you've been to the Arizona memorial. Unlikely to have been such a hit if the Nimitz had gone back to (say) the Spanish American War to avenge the USS Maine. Movie also has some mighty fine handling of the planes...

@onthemoney90 Actually an author named John Birmingham wrote a series of novels called "The Axis of Time" where a modern 21st century Carrier Battle Group, not just the carrier itself, is transported back in time to just before the Battle of Midway. Stuck in 1942 the Group's presence not only affects the outcome of the war (at least how it was fought) but also the changes that occur in society as a result of its' arrival.

With their superior radar and speed, plus their long range missile at the beginning of skirmish, the Zeros shouldn't have any chance. Dogfight should only start when the Tomcats ran out of missiles, and even with that, their guns should have more range, allowing them to hit and run effectively before any zeros can be in any firing position.

Watching the movie again now in 2019 makes me cringe at this scene. Still overall a good and interesting movie though! It is my humble opinion that before "Niitaka-yama Nobore" Japan was at peace with the US. After that message and before Pearl Harbor they were at war. As early as December 7, 1941, we knew perfectly well that the attack had to have been planned weeks in advance, and that between whenever the Japanese fleet left (November 26th as history shows) and December 7th, the Japanese embassy had been lying to us. "I must say that in all my conversations with you [the Japanese Ambassador] during the last nine months I have never uttered one word of untruth. This is borne out absolutely by the record. In all my fifty years of public service I have never seen a document that was more crowded with infamous falsehoods and distortions - infamous falsehoods and distortions on a scale so huge that I never imagined until today that any government on this planet was capable of uttering them." - Secretary of State Cordell Hull on the Japanese Note to the United States (The Fourteen Part Message) United States December 7, 1941

I always wondered how much of a 'villain' Japan was... Yes they did some mean sh*t prior to the war at China, Korea and Indochina, but so did the rest of Europe, the morality of that era and today was just different. The main reason of their entry to the war was US imposing oil embargo to them, which is a horrific blow that will cripple their economy and military. It's easy to make them into the villain since they lost, but was it that simple? I haven't reached consensus myself, tho.

What? You blind? The oil embargo, the iron ore and steel embargoes and the U.S. seizure of Japanese assets in U.S. banks were a mere postscript at the end of U.S. aggression against japan that had been going on for four years already. The U.S. had been supplying Japan's war-enemy China with war material since 1937, a clear act of war by the U.S. against Japan under the 1907 Hague Conventions. The Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor in 1941 was a long-delayed retaliation, not an initial unprovoked aggression, as Roosevelt lied. Roosevelt forced the Japanese to attack, he even moved the U.S. battleship fleet from its base in San Diego to Pearl Harbor to give the Japanese something to attack that their naval forces could reach. Roosevelt was determined to get the U.S. into WWII.
