This challenge is for those seeking an absurd fitness challenge for no good reason. Starting at the base of Park City’s Olympic Park, we take our 52-pound Specialized electric mountain bike and pretend the battery is completely dead, and then attempt to ascend 1,000 vertical feet up the Utah Olympic Park road up to the start of the Bobsled. The ride starts at roughly 6,400 feet and ends at roughly 7,350 feet, so the air is thin to start. I weigh about 225 pounds, about 20 pounds heavier than when I used to race mountain and road bikes. I'm 52 years old and am NOT in good bike shape. Without the power on, this will test me, as the ride takes around 30-35 minutes and goes up, and up, and up.... The bike is SO heavy, has 29" wheels with knobby tires and horrible rolling resistance on pavement. It's a tank. Painful? Yes. Fun? Sort of? The challenge is to use your eBike as a brick, turn it off, and see if you can ride up your local hill. Or, if you come to Park City, his us up in the comments or email me directly and we'll do this challenge together. If I get in shape, I think I can do a sub-30-minute time, but that would take me a few weeks of conditioning and a hard effort. I know it sounds a little nuts, turning off a perfectly good ebike and suffering, but it's strangely rewarding. Have fun!
