Old altimeters' indicator needles stick all the time. The reason he has to tap on the face of it is because the engine isn't running. When the engine is running, it vibrates the entire plane, including the instrument panel, which negates the need to tap on the glass to unstick the needle.

Took a friend out for a ride in a Champ, full power pull back on stick and it descended so look for help. Found a good thermal that gave 1500FPM up steady with occasional shots at 2000 and quit climbing to keep from busting the floor of a 30 mile veil. Figured the thermal added another 100 HP to the A65 in the nose.

I watched my boss (owned a sailplane center) do the very same thing in a Citabria. Gained altitude circling for quite some time, then rolled out, entered the pattern, and r olled right up to the hangar door. Biggest impression was how much wind noise there was compared to a sailplane.

At 6:07 he is 50 feet too high for a left turn to final and has to turn right and do a slip then a sharp left to the runway where he has to slip again to lose the extra altitude he still has. All in all, an extremely accurate and precise maneuver observing the cardinal rule of "never turn your back to the runway". Classic dead stick landing well above stall speed.

It's normal for instruments to stick when there's no engine vibration, something not anticipated by the instrument manufacturer. Some early jets even had instrument panel vibrators to deal with it.

One of the glider practical test tasks is performing a landing without reference to the altimeter. If you base your height on proper angles, you’ll never come up short of the runway.
